THE PLAYERS ASKS THE QUESTION “WHAT ARE THE 39 STEPS?”
WITH BROADWAY SEASON OPENER
Sarasota, FL — The Players Theatre opens their 86th Season Broadway Series at the end of September with a fast-paced Hitchcock whodunit comedy, “The 39 Steps.” Directed by Kyle E. Turoff, the show will have a limited run from September 30th to October 11th. This two-time Tony Award Winner was adapted by Patrick Barlow from the novel by John Buchan and from the movie directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Based on the 1935 adventure film by the same title, the play calls for over 50 characters to be played by only four actors. The hero, Richard Hannay, is played by Jared Walker, while Melissa Ingrisano plays the three women with whom Hannay is romantically involved. The two remaining actors, Jeffery Kin & Walter Price must play every other role in the play including men, women, children and occasionally villains and heroes. A juicy spy thriller is thus turned zany with Monty Python-like humor and sight gags. There are also many allusions to several other Alfred Hitchcock films as hidden “easter eggs” within the script.

Our season opener is indicative of what the season is themed… ‘Celebrating what makes us Unique’. ‘The 39 Steps’ is a unique and exciting Tony Award winning play that is the perfect way to open a season of LIVE theatre. The show is inventive, challenging and yes, even silly, but it’s done with an exciting theatrical flair that makes it fun for patrons and the actors alike!
Our byline is ‘Hitchcock meets Hilarious’ and its true! It’s probably more fun than four actors should be allowed to have on stage. It’s a winner…all the way around!”
Story:
A man with a boring life meets a woman with a thick accent who says she’s a spy. When he takes her home, she is murdered. Soon, a mysterious organization called “The 39 Steps” is hot on the man’s trail in a nationwide manhunt that climaxes in a death-defying finale!
Tickets are $25 for regular seating and $30 for premium seating (rows A-E), full-time students 24 and under with valid ID are $12.
