DeGeneres announced she would add footwear to her luxury lifestyle brand in early September, much to the dismay of animal rights activists. DeGeneres has said she is vegan, and even launched a vegan website, “Going Vegan with Ellen,” in 2011.
“I’m a longtime Ellen DeGeneres fan and am so saddened to see her walk away from animal rights advocacy,” says Care2 petition author and Care2 lead staff writer Chris Sosa. “Ellen was among the voices who taught me about equality as a young teen, despite the homophobia of my environment. When she started speaking out for animal rights, I loved her even more.”
DeGeneres’ shoe line will include leather boots manufactured by leather company the Camuto Group in Brazil. The shoes will start at $250.
Sosa points out on his Care2 petition that DeGeneres had an animal-free wedding, including a vegan cake, but has been slowly moving away from animal rights advocacy. In 2008, she became the face of CoverGirl, which “tests on animals and is not a plant-based line.” And in 2014, she handed out cheese pizza during her stint hosting the Oscars.
“I sincerely hope our voices will remind Ellen of the important responsibility she has as a public figure to stand up for everyone who is being oppressed, including animals,” Sosa says. “That she would take part in such obvious animal exploitation isn’t just heartbreaking, it’s baffling.”
