YPHIL – International Philharmonic Orchestra presents the fourth of Seven Epic Concerts Gathering for Youth Empowerment, September 17, 2015 at 7:30pm at NYU’s Skirball Center for the Performing Arts

YPHIL – International Philharmonic Orchestra brings 100 musicians from 74 different countries to perform during New York’s United Nations General Assembly, aiming to celebrate the power of youth. 100 magnificent performers, picked from more than 900 musicians from all over the world, will meet for the first time, collaborating and practicing day and night, to captivate audiences with their enormous energy. Building on the widespread influence of music, the innovative program empowers youth to work together and exercise creativity.

The exhilarating piece entitled Ethnic Dance, which includes sound of traditional musical instruments from across the world, will premiere for the first time at the NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts concert by world-renowned composer and conductor, maestro Faruk Kanca. This energizing performance will also include excerpts from the critically-acclaimed Rock Concerto by Markov and Remington, performed by Markov himself on the unique gold electric violin.

Faruk Kanca

Mr. Kanca is a multi-talented  composer, conductor, music teacher, music director, writer, pianist and a businessman. He earned his bachelor’s degree in music education from Ondokuz Mayis University, a master’s degree in music composition from Robert Schumann Musikhoch schule, a second master’s degree in music education from Ataturk University, a Ph.D. in music composition from Robert Schumann Musikhochschule, and music education from Gazi University. Mr. Kanca’s has taught piano, composition, harmony, and musical form at both Ataturk and Gazi Universities. He has performed extensively as a pianist and conductor in New York, Turkey, Italy, Germany, Holland, Sweden, Belgium, Denmark, Amsterdam, Finland, and Norway. In 2012 he was the creator, composer, and musical director of the World Peace Orchestra. He has published three books including Mozart and Member of Janissary Band, Religion and Music, and Origin of Music. In January 2015 he founded Kanca Media and he is one of the Artistic Board Members of YPHIL International Philharmonic Orchestra.

Internationally celebrated violinist Alexander Markov has been hailed as one of the most captivating musicians now before the public. Lord Yehudi Menuhin wrote, “He is without doubt one of the most brilliant and musical of violinists . . . Alexander Markov will certainly leave his mark on the music-lovers of the world and in the annals of the violin virtuosi of our day.” Gold Medal winner at the Paganini International Violin Competition, Mr. Markov has appeared as a soloist with some of the world’s most celebrated orchestras such as the Philadelphia Orchestra, the BBC and the Montreal Symphonies, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the BBC Symphony, the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra, the Budapest Festival Orchestra and the Detroit Symphony. He has worked with major conductors of our day, including Neeme Jarvi, Christoph Eschenbach and Ivan Fischer. Markov has also shared concerts with such luminaries as Martha Argerich. Mr. Markov has established a reputation second-to-none in the 19th-century virtuoso repertoire. His CD release and the video of the 24 Paganini Caprices for solo violin, directed by the legendary film director Bruno Monsaingeon, caused a sensation, and as a result he recorded five more CDs for the Erato/Warner Classics. Markov remains one of the very few violinists in the world who performs the entire set of the 24 Paganini Caprices in a single recital, and he is featured in the internationally acclaimed film about great violinists “The Art of Violin,” also directed by Bruno Monsaingeon. In 2006 Warner released a long-awaited DVD of the 24 Paganini Caprices which instantly became one of the best-selling classical DVDs on the Amazon charts. Many of the Caprices were posted by fans around the world on YouTube and some of the clips have hundreds of thousands hits. Alexander Markov’s musical journey takes him far beyond his activity as a classical violin soloist. He has composed “Rock Concerto,” an original composition collaborating with James V. Remington, who also designed for him a new six-string electric violin. The new-patented instrument, the only one of its kind in the world, has a unique sound and the most enormous dynamic range from soft and sweet to the monstrous and powerful. (Markov plays it through a Marshall amp.) “Rock Concerto” is a crossover epic, which features Markov’s performance on the new electric violin and his rock band, accompanied by a symphony orchestra and a chorus. The musicians in his band are some of the most celebrated artists in the rock world, and tickets to “Rock Concerto” concerts are sold-out weeks in advance. Markov’s vision is to bridge a gap between classical and rock audiences and attracting many young people who would otherwise never go to a symphony. Awarded a prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1987, Mr. Markov made his New York debut recital at Carnegie Hall. Alexander Markov was born in Moscow and studied violin with his father, concert violinist Albert Markov. By the time he was eight years old, he was already appearing as a soloist with orchestras and performing double concertos with his father. Markov emigrated to the U.S. with his parents and received his United States citizenship in 1982.

James V. Remington

Celebrated designer and composer James V. Remington started collaboration with A. Markov in rock music and they wrote together songs in heavy metal style. But simply writing the songs wasn’t enough – they both were thinking of expanding the horizons of their capability. That’s how the idea of  “Rock Concerto” was born.

“Rock Concerto” was written as a fusion of classical and rock music by employing and utilizing both the acoustic sounds of a symphony orchestra with the electric amplified sounds of a rock band to open the door for a “fresh air” with its unlimited possibilities. Many sections from the “heavy metal” songs they did in the past have been rearranged and used in the “Rock Concerto”.

YPHIL – International Philharmonic Orchestra aims to show the world how representatives of different countries can work together regardless of their nationality, race and beliefs; bringing out the magnificent music, celebrating the collaboration of cultures. This dynamic performance will exemplify how collaborating with people from all over the world can bring a better tomorrow. YPHIL – International Philharmonic Orchestra envisions including more than 100 young musicians from more than 70 different countries for its first year. Young musicians between the ages of 18 to 26 will come from a wide range of cultural, linguistic, ethnic and religious backgrounds to take part in this ensemble. Creating this festival of peace and fraternity will empower the voices of our youth, promote peace and dialogue, and raise awareness for universal youth issues. Serhat Kaan (founder and chair, YPHIL) is the director of TURKEN Foundation. After obtaining Industrial Engineering degree with honors in Istanbul, he moved to New York City in 2010 to continue his studies for both masters and PHD degrees on full scholarship from the Ministry of National Education of Turkey. He has been actively engaged in philanthropy since 2006, the year he began to serve as the president of the Industrial Engineering Club at Fatih University. His hard work to elevate the prestige of Industrial Engineering Club was recognized by both his college and civil society leaders. Mr. Kaan enjoys a rare combination of technical expertise and political insight. Mr. Kaan’s prior service to the New York City Industries for the Blind proves his commitment in the field of human rights. His leadership role at the WPO Orchestra proves his contributions and involvement in raising awareness for global youth issues. Mr. Kaan currently holds M.S. Degree in Industrial Engineering and M.A. Degree in International Relations & Politics both from New York University; and is seeking a J.D. Degree in New York City.
