“There is always one song off of an album that we all agree is our collective favorite. For Human Hearts it was, for whatever reason, ‘Peopling of London’ and for Magnetic Bodies/Map of Bones it’s, by far, ‘Roaming Empire.'” – Dan Didier

“It’s been four years since the band’s last release, Human Hearts,” writes the A.V. Club in early praise of Magnetic Bodies/Maps of Bones, and “it’s evident that all that time off didn’t diminish the band’s ability to write an earworm.” Dan Didier (drums) and Davey von Bohlen (vocals, guitar) have been playing music together for 20 years now. More than half of that time has been spent with Maritime, the other with their incredibly influential band The Promise Ring . Over the past year, alongside Maritime guitarist Dan Hinz and bassist Justin Klug, the Milwaukee four-piece have worked on and off in the studio as they completed recording on their fifth full-length release.
After the slick pop peak of Human Hearts -which followed the ambitious Heresy And The Hotel Choir– Magnetic Bodies/Maps of Bones feels a little more risky, a little weirder, a little more oblique in its sentiment but nonetheless purposeful. Von Bohlen’s words, especially, are back to their old impressionism, with pathos one minute and unbridled joy another. On “Roaming Empire,” Von Bohlen claims, like so many before him, that he knew more then than he does now, but it’s never that simple.
Keep posted in the coming weeks for new music and further announcements on their forthcoming album and tour dates.
