LEADING ELECTRONIC DANCE MUSIC BRAND
ULTRA MUSIC
CELEBRATES 20th ANNIVERSARY THIS FALL
LABEL LEAPS TO #1 ON THE BILLBOARD HOT 100
WITH OMI’s “CHEERLEADER”
Since its incorporation on October 27, 1995, ULTRA MUSIC-then called Ultra Records-has been at the forefront of electronic and dance music. This fall, the New York-based label celebrates two decades of releases helmed by Founder and President Patrick Moxey.
Leading into the monumental occasion, ULTRA MUSIC leaped to the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week (July 13) with the hit single “Cheerleader” by OMI. This marks the first ever chart topping placement for Ultra, who in association with Louder Than Life and Columbia Records, propelled the track forward with a remix by German producer Felix Jaehn, breathing European pop radio friendly life into the dancehall-rooted song.
Today, ULTRA MUSIC, based in Manhattan, boasts 33 full time employees and offices in Europe and Canada, as well as Los Angeles. However, the label started out small and was always (and remains) a personal obsession of one man who loved dance music before it was considered “cool” in cities and the suburbs alike. Ultra’s first release was the single “Lift Me Up” by MK featuring Claire Rivers. Over its 20 year reign, the label released many milestone works from artists from its early days with Basement Boys, Roger Sanchez, Little Louie Vega, Eric Morillo, Sasha, Wildchild, DJ Sneak and Reel Soul to those that were first coming over to America from overseas like David Guetta, Armin Van Buuren and Axwell. To date, Ultra Music has put out over 5,000 releases including singles, EPs, mix compilations and albums.
In 2013, ULTRA MUSIC joined forces with Sony Music International in a world-wide strategic partnership covering A&R, distribution, international repertoire and more while naming Patrick Moxey as President of Electronic Music for the global brand. In its new incarnation, the label has released albums and singles from the likes of Steve Aoki, Above & Beyond, Tiesto, Calvin Harris, Kaskade, Kygo, Hardwell, The Bloody Beetroots, TOKiMONSTA, Mt. Eden, Carnage, Flosstradamus, MAKO and Hot Since 82 to name a few.
ULTRA MUSIC‘s future holds much excitement with upcoming releases from pioneering French electronic artist Jean-Michel Jarre, NERVO, Chris Lake and Anna Lunoe. The label is also heavily involved with Ultimate DJ, the upcoming GLOBAL electronic music competition-style live series set to appear across Yahoo!’s live, digital magazine and original video programming. Ultimate DJ will see some of the hottest new electronic music DJ’s from around the world competing in this live global series. Set to air on Yahoo Live with worldwide voting via Tumblr, the winner will be crowned the Ultimate DJ and be offered an opportunity to headline a major electronic music festival and a record contract with Ultra Records and Sony Music.
ULTRA’s leader Patrick Moxey has been tapped as one of the most influential executives in the electronic and dance music genre by the likes of Billboard, Rolling Stone, Business Week and Mixmag, just to name a few. Wrote Billboard (6/12/15) in their recent Power Players package, “Moxey’s Ultra Records just celebrated its 20th anniversary, and the pioneering label experienced a renaissance during the past year, with crossover chart-climbers like Robin Schulz’s remix of Mr. Probz’s ‘Waves’ and new tastemakers like Alina Baraz & Galimatias. Prior to its Sony merger in 2013, Ultra put out seminal releases from the likes of deadmau5 and Kaskade. Now, as Sony’s president of electronic music, Moxey is still trusting his gut on talent. Case in point: winning the 2014 bidding war for Kygo and making OMI’s ‘Cheerleader’ an unlikely top 20 smash.”
