SARASOTA COUNTY – Gulf Gate Public Library and Sarasota County beach pavilions are nominees in the Florida Chapter of the American Institute of Architects People’s Choice Competition.

This public competition highlights the importance of Florida’s architects, skilled professionals who help meet the needs of communities through innovative building design. The county projects are two of only 48 total buildings nominated around the state.

The beach pavilions, which were designed by Sweet Sparkman Architects for several Sarasota County beaches, were recognized for their exemplary ramp system as well as their exterior materials, which have the ability to withstand the waterfront environment and seasonal weather.

“We proudly celebrate the outstanding work of Sweet Sparkman at our county parks and their commitment to quality design, environmental sustainability and interpretation of the natural environment,” said Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Director Carolyn Brown.

Gulf Gate Library, designed by Harvard Jolly Architecture, was recognized by the AIA for its unique shape and various rooms equipped for group study, meetings, a childrens’ area and numerous comfortable reading areas. The 25,000-square-foot library celebrated its grand opening in January.

“Both the exterior and interior design of the Gulf Gate Public Library were the result of a deep level of involvement by the community, including citizens, members of the Friends organization and the library staff,” said Libraries and Historical Resources Director Sarabeth Kalajian. “As citizens participated in a series of public workshops, the Harvard Jolly architect team listened, and then interpreted the feedack to incorporate ideas into the plan. What resulted was a bold architectural design, with inviting, comfortable, naturally-lit spaces that attract people of all ages. The continued high volume of library use is a testament to the great blend of practical functionality and lovely aesthetics.”

The public can vote for their favorite buildings at www.floridapeopleschoice.org until midnight July 31. Buildings will be listed by structure’s name and location. The results will be announced Aug. 1 at AIA Florida’s Annual Convention in Boca Raton.
