Summer Learning Day was a Smash!
|
Nearly 500 students and more than 250 adults attended Summer Learning Day at the Museum in June, held in conjunction with the Campaign for Grade Level Reading. The Museum offered free admission to Manatee and Sarasota County students up to age 12 along with one free adult chaperone. Students received a “Summer Survival Booklet,” which guided them in Museum activities, encourages reading and provides opportunities for free return trips to the Museum.
“Many participants reported they would not have been able to visit without complimentary admission,” said Museum CEO Brynne Anne Besio. “We’re very pleased to have funds for underserved youth from the Wells Fargo Foundation which we used to cover the admissions. The Museum is an important part of the education landscape in the region, and we want to support the Summer Learning effort as much as we can. We are actively involved in the Campaign for Grade Level Reading with a staff member, Dannie Sherrill, sitting on the Steering Committee.”

Don’t miss out on the newest exhibition at the South Florida Museum, The Mystery of the Mayan Medallion. The exhibition is now open in the East Gallery through September 13, 2015.
Get a taste of what it’s like to be an archaeologist, biologist or astromathematician while exploring the world of the ancient Maya. An archaeological team has mysteriously disappeared from a dig site in Palenque, Mexico. They had been investigating a long-standing rumor that a priceless jade medallion is buried in the temple there. However, something has scared them off. Luckily, in their haste to escape, they managed to leave behind a video with clues and a warning to all who come after. The original team has left behind valuable information in the field stations that they constructed. Student archaeologists must uncover the mystery of the dig site and find the priceless treasure. Visitors will have fun learning about science, language and history with hands-on immersive activities! Perfect for the whole family.
