“Don Walker brings a folksy sense of calm superiority to his role as Serge. He doesn’t try to force his opinions on others, but he naturally expects them to follow along, which is what drives Marc crazy, in the nicely measured, aggressively frustrated performance by Gary Marachek. Even if he doesn’t like them, Yvan needs the other two to bring some calm to his chaotic life. He’s the least grounded of the three and also the most fascinating in the exuberant performance by Larry Alexander.”

“The actors portraying Reza’s over-analytical Stooges are all as funny as L’Enfer. Marachek is great at seething hostility. His Marc is either foaming at the mouth or (even funnier) doing his best to be nice. Serge’s unflappable, bland smugness is what’s driving him crazy … But Alexander steals the show in a comic tour de force when he breathlessly relates (doing all the voices, Robin Williams-style) the manipulative machinations of his fiancée, mother and future mother in-law concerning the fine points of the wedding invitation … Even if you don’t know much about ‘ART,’ you’ll be laughing all the way home.”

“A potent reason for the play’s popularity is its focus on modern art itself and on its commercial values. The white painting exemplifies deconstructive art (‘erasure’ of the traditional), just as ‘ART’ deconstructs the friendship among three men. Serge does value his painting as a commodity but mainly because he sees something in it. Marc sees white, worth zero. Yvan sees an object that has negative meaning to each of the others, akin to the way they’ve viewed him.”
