City of Chicago Hosting Free Business Workshops Throughout May
City’s Small Business Center to Present Workshop On ‘How to Obtain a Shared Kitchen Operator or User License’

The City of Chicago’s food truck season is underway and to help burgeoning food truck owners and aspiring entrepreneurs in the industry, the Department of Business Affairs & Consumer Protection (BACP) is presenting its first workshop on “How to Obtain a Shared Kitchen Operator or User License” on May 13 at 3 p.m.
“Hosting free workshops is one of the ways City Hall is supporting and helping the small business community flourish,” said Commissioner Maria Guerra Lapacek, of BACP. “Access to City officials and partner agencies is key to putting entrepreneurs on the path to success.”
The City of Chicago also is set to present “City Inspections – Ask Questions, Get Answers” with officials from four City departments, and SomerCor 504, Inc. (City of Chicago SBIF Administrator) will present “Small Business Improvement Fund (SBIF) Grants in Chicago.”

How to Open a Day Care” presented by the Women’s Business Development Center, “Trademarks, Patents, Trade Secrets, and Copyrights: How To Recognize And Protect Your Company’s Assets” presented by Patrick J. Smith of Greer, Burns & Crain, Ltd., “C corp, S corp, LLC — Which is Right for My Business?” presented by The Law Project, “Turning Online Ads Into Profit” presented by Brandon Lewin of www.BrandonMLewin.com, “Recording and Reporting Financial Statements & Payroll” presented by John Bawden of AmCheck and Lema Khorshid of Fuksa Khorshid, LLC., and “What You Need to Know to Open a Retail Store in Chicago,” presented by Florence Hardy of the Illinois Small Business Development Center at the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce.
The Small Business Center at the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection hosts free business workshops every Wednesday and Friday in Room 805 at City Hall, 121 N. LaSalle St., Chicago. Workshops are conducted by city officials, BACP’s partner organizations, and experts in the industry. During this presentation, you will learn important accounting principles and establish guidelines for your cash flow, accounts receivables, and accounts payable. We will review important tax requirements, including how to properly report tips to the IRS, and we’ll discuss penalties for late payments. This session will also cover payroll, including filing W2 forms, determining payroll taxes, enforcing employees’ wage garnishes, and understanding job codes. Finally, we will discuss what qualities to look for when selecting the right restaurant accountant and payroll services provider.
