VOCAL ARTS MASTER CLASS FEATURING JUILLIARD SINGERS

NEW YORK –– The Juilliard School’s Ellen and James S. Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts concludes its series of live-streamed vocal arts master classes this semester with baritone Gerald Finley on Thursday, May 7, 2015. Mr. Finley appears by kind permission of The Metropolitan Opera. At the Met, he will be performing in Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress on May 1, 4, and 9, 2015.
Four Juilliard singers have been selected to participate in Mr. Finley’s master class: countertenor Eric Jurenas (with pianist Juliana Han); baritone Joe Eletto (with pianist William Kelley); bass Daniel Miroslaw (with pianist Valeriya Polunina); and soprano Alexandra Razskazoff (with pianist Daniel Fung). Repertoire will be announced from the stage; a short Q & A follows each master class.
The streamed master class will take place between 4-6 p.m. and be hosted on the Juilliard website’s streaming channel at live.juilliard.edu.

About Gerald Finley
Internationally acclaimed, Grammy and Juno-Award-winning Canadian baritone Gerald Finley began singing as a chorister in Ottawa before completing his musical studies in the U.K. at the Royal College of Music, King’s College, Cambridge, and the National Opera Studio.
After his initial successes in the Mozart baritone repertoire, he now appears in a variety of leading roles at the world’s opera houses. His Don Giovanni has been seen in Salzburg, Munich, Vienna, Prague, Rome, New York, Paris, Tel Aviv, and London. He has created the lead roles in major premieres:
Howard K. Stern (Anna Nicole, ROH Covent Garden), J. Robert Oppenheimer (Doctor Atomic, Metropolitan Opera New York and Grammy Award), Harry Heegan (The Silver Tassie, English National Opera), Mr. Fox (Fantastic Mr. Fox), and Jaufre Rudel (L’amour de loin). His expanding dramatic repertoire includes recent outstanding successes as Hans Sachs (Meistersinger) at Glyndebourne also on DVD, Iago (Otello) with the LSO in concert and on CD, Rossini’s Guillaume Tell in Rome and on EMI CD, and Eugene Onegin at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. In 2012, he was honored by
Opera Canada with a Ruby Award. In 2014 he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada.
He performs with all the major orchestras of the world, in oratorio and symphonic repertoire, notably the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, London Symphony, Concertgebouw, and the Berlin Philharmonic. With the London Philharmonic his CD “Arias in English” won the 2011 Juno Award.
With Hyperion Records his releases include a Gramophone magazine award-winning recording of Schumann’s Dichterliebe, and two further Gramophone awards for Songs by Samuel Barber, and Britten’s Songs and Proverbs, all with Julius Drake. He has been twice nominated as Gramophone’s Artist of the Year in 2006 and 2009.
Features of this season include concerts and recitals in Europe and the USA, his role debut as Falstaff at the Canadian Opera Company, The Marriage of Figaro in Munich, Nick Shadow at the Met, and Guillaume Tell at Covent Garden. He adds to his Wagner roles at Lyric Opera of Chicago as Wolfram in Tannhäuser. His recent recording projects with Julius Drake include Winterreise and an album of Liszt Songs on Hyperion. He is a visiting professor at the Royal College of Music and gives master classes whenever his performing schedule allows.
About the Juilliard Singers
Praised by The New York Times for his “robust baritone,” Joe Eletto is a current Master of Music degree student at Juilliard, studying with Robert C. White Jr. This summer, he will debut with both Crested Butte Music Festival singing Malatesta in Donizetti’s Don Pasquale, and Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute as a Vocal Fellow, and will return to Bard Music Festival for their musical survey of Mexican composer Carlos Chávez. At Juilliard, Joe sang the roles of Junius in Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia and Le Surintendant des plaisirs in Massenet’s Cendrillon, and covered the role of Antonio in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro. He was a soloist in New York Festival of Song’s residency at Juilliard, and sang Peter, Pilate, and Judas for Juilliard415’s presentation of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion in Aiken, Spivey Hall, and Alice Tully Hall. Joe has received further training at Caramoor Bel Canto, Houston Grand Opera’s Young Artist Vocal Academy, Aspen Music Festival and School, and SongFest as a Stern Fellow. He has received awards from the Opera Index, Classical Singer, and Hal Leonard vocal competitions, and completed his Bachelor of Music with distinction in research and creative works at Rice University. He holds the Risë Stevens and the Marion L. Dears scholarships.
Countertenor Eric Jurenas, from Annandale, Virginia, is a Master of Music degree student at Juilliard, where he studies with Robert C. White Jr. Mr. Jurenas has performed as featured soloist with the Santa Fe Opera, Michigan Opera Theatre, Opera Philadelphia, Wolf Trap Opera, Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, American Bach Soloists, and the Colorado Bach Ensemble, among others. This season’s highlights include performances with the Glimmerglass Opera Festival, American Bach Soloists, Juilliard415, Juilliard Songfest, AXIOM, New Juilliard Ensemble, Burlington Choral Society, and he will be artist-in-residence at the Baldwin Wallace Bach Festival, the oldest American collegiate festival. A frequent performer of new music, he has covered David Daniels in the title role of Theodore Morrison’s Oscar, co-commissioned by the Santa Fe Opera and Opera Philadelphia. Mr. Jurenas has won and received awards from several vocal competitions, including a prestigious award from the Sullivan Foundation, first place in the Hal Leonard Online Vocal Competition, Dayton Opera Guild Competition, Kentucky Bach Choir Competition, and the Bel Canto Chorus of Milwaukee Competition. He received his bachelor’s degree from the College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) at the University of Cincinnati. Bass Daniel Miroslaw is in the Artist Diploma in Opera Studies program at Juilliard where he studies with Edith Wiens. This year at Juilliard, Mr. Miroslaw sang the roles of Geronio in Il Turco in Italia and Collatinus in The Rape of Lucretia. Mr. Miroslaw won a Special Prize at the 15th Ada Sari International Vocal Artistry Competition. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the Lodz Academy of Music and his master’s degree from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He also studied at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Mannheim. He holds the Risë Stevens Scholarship, the Pfeiffenberger Memorial Scholarship, Hardesty and is supported by the Beverley Peck Johnson Fund.
Soprano Alexandra Razskazoff, from Minneapolis, Minnesota, is a Master of Music student at Juilliard, studying with Robert C. White Jr. Ms. Razskazoff received her B.M. from the Peabody Conservatory. While in Baltimore, Ms. Razskazoff performed at the Modell Performing Arts Center at the Lyric where she portrayed Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni) under Leonardo Vordoni and Blanche de la Force (Dialogues des Carmélites) under Steven White. In 2013, Ms. Razskazoff participated in the Music Academy of the West, where she played the First Lady (Die Zauberflöte). Ms. Razskazoff will be an apprentice singer at the Santa Fe Opera this summer. She holds the Toulmin Foundation Scholarship.
