| The official video for “Rosaline” – the title track from Scott James’ new EP, set for release on July 10 – premieres today on HuffingtonPost.com. The clip, which marks James’ latest collaboration with director/photographer Ben Klein, can be viewed HERE. James, who has born in California and now resides in New York City, has been praised by American Songwriter for his “captivating voice.”
On “Rosaline,” the 19-year-old singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist explores the tension that can result when romantic feelings emerge for a close friend. Accompanying himself on the piano. James is backed on the track by Sean Hurley (John Mayer, Melissa Etheridge) on bass, Tim Pierce (Jason Mraz, Dave Matthews) on guitar, Greg Leisz (Beck, Sheryl Crow) on pedal steel guitar, and Blair Sinta (Melissa Etheridge, James Blunt) on drums. James recorded his forthcoming EP with producer Warren Huart (The Fray, James Blunt) at the famed Sunset Sound in Hollywood and Spitfire Studio in Los Angeles.
On Friday, May 1, the EP’s first single, “River,” will be released and James will preview songs from Rosaline at Rockwood Music Hall. The show is the latest in a series of NYC dates that has included a performance at the prestigious New York Songwriters Circle showcase. Directed by Tina Shafer, the showcase has been home to such artists as Norah Jones, Jesse Harris and Lana Del Rey.
Rosaline follows James’ 2013 EP Destinesia, which he recorded at age 17 with GRAMMY®-nominated producer/composer/multi-instrumentalist Joe DiBlasi. SiriusXM Radio’s “The Coffee House” channel played Destinesia’s “My Road” for six months and the official video for “Garden” quickly hit a quarter million views shortly after its release.
“[Destinesia] brings to mind the sweeping, bare-boned folk of Jeff Buckley,” said American Songwriter. The San Jose Mercury News noted, “Scott James delves deep in terms of emotional content. His plaintive vocals are somewhat reminiscent of the great Canadian artist Ron Sexsmith. And James displays a similar gift for crafting eloquent lyrics and memorable melodies.”
The five songs on Rosaline demonstrate James’ ever-deepening commitment to songwriting. “I’ve fallen in love with words more than I had before. Folk music is all about the lyrics and stories, and that’s what drives me,” says James.
In the seven years since he wrote his first song, James has penned more than 100 songs. “A lot of times I go to a park and write. Or I write in my room. Or while walking, I’ll record something on my phone,” he says. “It’s therapeutic, but I also hope others who are going through similar situations will connect with it, too.”
