To love together is to laugh together. Watch some of Sarasota’s best musical improvisers make up a romantic comedy musical on the spot. Your suggestions and ideas will inspire a never before seen love story that will take you from the first meeting all the way to the swoon-inspiring big kiss finale. Our talented cast will sing solos, duets, and full chorus numbers in a variety of different styles and genres from Swing to Ska to Sondheim. Come and fall in love again, with the improvised musical When X Meets Y!

What exactly does happen when X meets Y? The whole world breaks out in song, right? Well they do in Bowne’s Lab. Just go with it and sing along with this love-sick cast of improvisers. The show’s cast includes: Ali Reed, Will Luera, Chris Friday, Joey James, Patrick Jackson, Ellery Carlson, and Maria Schaedler-Luera.

FST’s Director of Improv, Will Luera, shared his inspiration for this fully improvised musical stating,

I’m lucky to work in a theatre that attracts so much talent from all over the country. When I found out that Ali Reed, a known musical improviser from NYC, was going to be in town performing in FST’s Vaudeville show Never Marry a Girl with Cold Feet, I knew that we needed to work together. I quickly assembled a team of some of our best musical improvisers in the Sarasota area to do a show called When X meets Y.”

Luera further explains the premise of this show stating, “The show will be a full-length improvised musical that will follow the arc of a relationship between X (our female) and Y (our male). At the top of the show, the audience will help determine who our X and Y will be as well as where the musical will take place. What will follow is a fully improvised story that will show how our two leads met, fell in love, and then…well, that will be up to the audience to help us figure out. Not only will the show feature a completely improvised story but it will also have solos, duets, full cast numbers and everything else you would expect from a musical.”

About Florida Studio Theatre

Known as Sarasota’s Contemporary Theatre, Florida Studio Theatre was founded in 1973 by Jon Spelman. Starting out as a small touring company, FST traveled to places such as migrant camps and prisons. The company then acquired the former Woman’s Club building, becoming the first permanent venue. Shortly after Richard Hopkins arrived, the building was purchased and renamed The Keating Theatre. In the years that followed, Florida Studio Theatre established itself as a major force in American Theatre, presenting contemporary theatre in its five theatre venues: the Keating Theatre,  the Gompertz Theatre, the Parisian style Goldstein Cabaret and John C. Court Cabaret,  and Bowne’s Lab Theatre.

Even with its growth, Florida Studio Theatre remains firmly committed to making the arts accessible and affordable to a broad-based audience.  FST develops theatre that speaks to our living, evolving, and dynamically changing world.  As FST grows and expands, it continues to provide audiences with challenging, contemporary drama and innovative programs.
