Nikolai Luganksy makes a rare NYC appearance

Lugansky/Tchaikovsky
Luganksy presents a Tchaikovsky surprise
Russian virtuoso opens with Schubert
Tchaikovsky: The Nutcracker, the 1812 Overture, the “Pathetique” Symphony … and the Grand Piano Sonata? The dynamic Russian pianist Nikolai Luganksy, making a rare NYC appearance himself, presents Tchaikovsky’s largest work for solo piano.

Performances of this work are so rare that the New York Times website turns up only one mention: Yefim Bronfman played it back in 2010. Written at the same time as the Violin Concerto, it is a delightful surprise to any fan of this beloved composer.

Lugansky opens the program with another master of the melodic line: Schubert, whom he’s only just begun to focus on in depth.

American Guitarist-Composers
The American composer-guitarist
Four artists—one evening
In the same tradition as its tribute concerts to Andrés Segovia and Leo Brouwer, 92Y honors the American composer-guitarist with a program of works and performances by four modern-day American greats: Frederic Hand, David Leisner (with flutist Tara Helen O’Connor), Gyan Riley and Andrew York.

As Art of the Guitar artistic director Ben Verdery explains, “These artists share in a long legacy of the composer-performer. It is in their DNA to create music on their instrument. It is also their adventuresome musical spirit that particularly distinguishes them as American. Like Copland, they have explored the various musical traditions of our country with vigor and passion.”
