92Y Concerts, March means masters of piano & guitar, with a Tchaikovsky surprise

Performances of this work are so rare that the New York Times website turns up only one mention: Yefim Bronfman played it back in 2010. Written at the same time as the Violin Concerto, it is a delightful surprise to any fan of this beloved composer.

Lugansky opens the program with another master of the melodic line: Schubert, whom he’s only just begun to focus on in depth.

As Art of the Guitar artistic director Ben Verdery explains, “These artists share in a long legacy of the composer-performer. It is in their DNA to create music on their instrument. It is also their adventuresome musical spirit that particularly distinguishes them as American. Like Copland, they have explored the various musical traditions of our country with vigor and passion.”

Honorable mention: Memie Osuga, cello, age 16, Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto No.1, Op.33

The winner plays in a FREE concert with the 92Y School of Music Orchestra on Sunday, April 19, at 7:30 pm. Ms. Cheng will play on a 1740 Roman-Dutch that has been loaned to her for the concert by Matthias Lehner of Matthias Lehner Violins.
