“Somewhere in the bubbling cauldron of brilliance that is ‘Fictionist,’ we’re offered an incandescent soundscape
that’s inescapable, causing us to stop what we’re doing and simply enjoy.” – The Music Ninja
“The band’s analog treated garage-pop has a grainy radiance that pays tribute to the tonal synthy pop-rock of the ’80s.
They’re the MGMT update of Peter Gabriel: incandescent shadow-pop.” – Baeble Music
“Fictionist blends Passion Pit’s ecstatic synth-pop with moodiness of early Aughts pop-punk,
and the result is something that will be stuck in your head for days.” – CMJ.com
March 5, 2015 – Provo, UT -Utah-based rockers, Fictionist have been named Band of The Year by Salt Lake City Weekly in their “Best of Utah 2015” roundup, today. Check it out here: http://bit.ly/BandOfTheYear15. The honor (previously awarded to bands including Neon Trees) follows the success of Fictionist’s critically acclaimed self-titled LP, released in October 2014. The band is currently gearing up for this month’s SXSW. For more information, please visit: http://www.fictionist.com/.
In addition to receiving recognition from their hometown, Fictionist has been garnering national attention – recently elected by New Music Seminar as part of their “Artist on The Verge, Class of 2015.” A prestigious list of indie artists hand selected by an A&R committee comprised of NMS partners, talent scouts, buyers, booking agents, tastemakers and industry experts. A full list of AOV-selected artists can be read on Billboard, here: http://bit.ly/NMSAOV15.
Fictionist’s Stuart Maxfield explains, “We’re so super stoked that City Weekly hosts this competition and that they’ve chosen us as this year’s winner. It’s an honor to be able to play at the upcoming Twilight Concert Series, which is such a big deal on our own turf.” He continues, “Music is hard work, and we’re so grateful that City Weekly, locally, and New Music Seminar, nationally, have heard something in our music.”
Fictionist – hailed as the “MGMT update of Peter Gabriel“-brings a brand of “incandescent shadow pop” (Baeble Music) that “blends Passion Pit’s ecstatic synth-pop with the moodiness of early Aughts pop-punk” (CMJ.com) from the mountain peaks of Provo, Utah, where the band has shared stages with Neon Trees, Imagine Dragons, Vampire Weekend, Young the Giant, Shiny Toy Guns, Mates of State and more. The virtuosic quartet’s 2014 self-titled album was hailed by IndieMusic.com as “an impressive, assertive, dark and twisty gem … the kind of album that breaks a band.”
Formed in 2008, Fictionist consists of Stuart Maxfield (lead vocals, bass), Robbie Connolly (lead vocals, guitar), Brandon Kitterman (guitar), and Aaron Anderson (drums). Fictionist’s previous records include Invisible Hand (2009), Lasting Echo (2010), a self-titled EP (2012), and an unreleased album for Atlantic Records (2013), produced by Ron Aniello (of Bruce Springsteen‘s Wrecking Ball). The Atlantic album, explains Connolly, was “huge-sounding and cool, but neither we nor the label felt settled about it, so we regrouped and recorded the album that we meant to record in the first place.”
