(Sarasota, FL) Allyn Gallup Contemporary Art gallery presents an exhibition showcasing paintings, drawings and mixed media by Craig Rubadoux, March 3-April 25. Opening with the artist is Friday, March 6, 6-8 p.m. The gallery is at 1288 N. Palm Ave., in Sarasota. For more information about this exhibit, call 941-366-2454 or visit www.allyngallup.com.

“Canvas, paper or any other surface Craig Rubadoux chooses becomes the foundation for a sentient stream of ideas through a torrent of gestures,” says Mark Ormond, the curator of the exhibit.

“Craig Rubadoux responds to many stimuli. It may be a thought, a memory, a word, a person or an animal,” says Ormond. “His approach is his own. It is neither pure realism nor pure abstraction. Rubadoux, has since the beginning of his career, which began in the early sixties, integrated and fused his ideas about painting that appear to reference both surrealist automatic drawing and biomorphic figuration. Through Rubadoux’s coordination of hand and eye responding to creative intuition, we experience the depth of introspection, breadth of perception and height of achievement in expressive inventiveness.”

Rubadoux has been described as a “Sarasota master,” and his mastery of figure and form, composition and gesture are plain to see in every work. His paintings are intensely personal glimpses into particular emotions, and he frequently speaks of his work as a journal. Greatly affected by his environment and a love of nature, Rubadoux focuses on line, color, and spatial relationships. While the subject matter varies, it embodies the artist’s personal conception of the world and his feelings and responses to that world. His art is included in many public and private collections, including the Guggenheim Museum, the High Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, and The Ringling.

“It takes only a glance to recognize a Rubadoux creation,” says Sheila Moore, the director of Allyn Gallup Contemporary. “His style is inimitable and unmistakable.”
