WHEN IRELAND WON’T BURY JAMES JOYCE, HIS WIDOW HAS A (FUNNY) BONE TO PICK
She’ll Stick To Ye’ is an 80-90 minute play based on an imagined situation. Nora Barnacle Joyce never returned to her native Ireland after the country refused to accept her husband, James Joyce’s body for burial in 1941. But if she had…
It is 1946 and Nora delivers a lecture to The Irish Women’s Literary Society. Given the scandalous reputation of the Joyce’s, the decision to honor her would have been a controversial one. But the literary society is an intelligent and open-minded group… to a degree, that is.
The moderator of the presentation, Mrs. Grace McVey nervously introduces Nora and hopes for a serene afternoon. After all, the convent-educated widow bore two children by Joyce while unmarried. Besides, her husband wrote Ulysses, the most censored book of the 20th century. Nora is scheduled to deliver an introductory lecture and then she’ll answer questions from the Dublin audience. With that amount of time at the podium, she might say anything.
JACK GILHOOLEY is an alum of Tony-awarded New Dramatists (NYC). Twice NEA-awarded (Individual Playwright & International/Centaur Theatre, Canada), four-time Florida Arts Council grant awardee, NY Federation of The Arts, Puffin Foundation (twice), PEN grants winner, double Fulbright Guest Artist (Spain & Ireland), first John Ringling Fund grant, etc.
Plays produced or developed at NY Shakespeare Fest., Manhattan Theatre Club, Asolo Theatre, O’Neill Conference etc. Creative Loafing/Tampa noted, “Jack Gilhooley is probably the most successful playwright living in the Sarasota area, possibly in all of Florida.” (June 16-22, 2010)
