SIR ANDRAS SCHIFF SELECTS: YOUNG PIANISTS Monday, March 2, 7:30 PM
An artist with total technical command, a prodigious memory and a colorful personality at the piano, the Israeli pianist Roman Rabinovich was the first prize winner of the Arthur Rubinstein Competition in 2008. At age 10 he made his Israel Philharmonic Orchestra debut under the baton of Zubin Mehta, and has since performed throughout the United States, Europe and Israel in such prestigious venues as Leipzig’s Gewandhaus, Wigmore Hall, Lucerne and Davos Fesivals in Switzerland, Carnegie’s Zankel Hall, the Metropolitan and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museums, the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory and Glazunov Hall in St. Petersburg. Early last year he released to critical acclaim his first CD, Ballets Russes—piano transcriptions of ballet scores. Mr. Rabinovich is also a gifted visual artist. MEITAR ENSEMBLE Monday, March 9, 8:30 PM
The ensemble, founded in 2004 in Tel Aviv by artistic director Amit Dolberg, has established itself as a prominent array of virtuosos specializing in contemporary music. They have been acclaimed for their significant contribution to the development of Israeli culture and music, receiving the Binyaminy Award (2006), Partosh Award (2008), and the Landau Award (2010). Over the past ten years they have commissioned and premiered more than 200 new works around the world, and they are currently ensemble-in-residence at the Israeli Conservatory of Music in Tel Aviv. Additionally, the ensemble has initiated a unique educational youth program, the Tedarim Project, offering young musicians in all fields (performance, conducting and composing) an opportunity to learn, explore and perform new music at the highest level. This educational program includes a series of master courses for young professional composers and conductors, called Contemporary Encounters, with musical figures such as Ivan Fedele, Philippe Leroux, Fabian Panisello, Pierre-Andre Valade and Michel Tabachnik. Described by The Washington Post as having “brilliant technique and real emotional depth,” Adam Golka received the 2008 Gilmore Young Artist Award and took first prize in the 2003 China Shanghai International Piano Competition. He has appeared at Carnegie Hall, Caramoor, Mostly Mozart and Bargemusic, and with leading orchestras throughout the US and abroad, including the Atlanta, Houston and Dallas Symphonies, the BBC Scottish Symphony and Shanghai and Warsaw Philharmonics. This season, Mr. Golka plays recitals at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, in Berlin and Zurich, and on tour in Israel. He studied with Leon Fleisher, and continues his work in master classes with Sir András Schiff, Richard Goode and Mitsuko Uchida. For the third in a series of three conversations, rescheduled from last month he sits down with his son Julian Fleisher to discuss Schubert’s special place in his world, exploring the master’s life and career through the lens of the music he loves. Leon Fleisher’s recordings of solo piano music, chamber music, and concertos are considered as a standard reference for aspiring pianists, and in 2008, he was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. As a champion of Russian music, he was given the honor “People’s Artist of Russia” in April 2013. Lugansky is Artistic Director of the Tambov Rachmaninov Festival and is also a supporter of, and regular performer at, the Rachmaninov Estate and Museum of Ivanovka. An acclaimed and award-winning recording artist, Nikolai Lugansky records exclusively for the Naïve-Ambroisie label. His recording of the Chopin Piano Concertos with Sinfonia Varsovia and Alexander Vedernikov was released this past summer.
