NATIONWIDE MAYORS’ AMICUS BRIEF ON IMMIGRATION FILED
Garcetti Helps Lead Cross-Country Coalition of 33 Mayors Against Immigration Reform Block
LOS ANGELES – Mayor Eric Garcetti announced today that the national coalition of mayors he organized with New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and Houston Mayor Annise Parker filed its amicus brief in Texas v United States in defense of President Obama’s executive action on immigration.
“Our residents, economies and municipal budgets directly suffer the consequences when federal immigration reform is stalled,” Mayor Garcetti said. “Moving forward with these reforms is a human and economic imperative, and we’re united to make sure this important policy moves forward.”
This mayoral-led effort dovetails with Mayor Garcetti’s commitment to municipal action on immigration to serve local populations by augmenting federal action or coping with federal inaction, including establishing the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs within his administration.
Texas v. United States was brought by a coalition of states and governors against President Obama’s executive action on immigration. The case is pending before the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas.
