SARASOTA COUNTY – Due to ongoing construction work at the Siesta Beach pavilion the 2015 Beach University has been canceled. The program, which spans four weeks and focuses on protecting coastal eco-systems, will return in 2016.
Improvements to Siesta Beach began in 2013 and are expected to be completed this year. Improvements to Siesta Beach include: expanded parking, renovated and expanded restrooms, relocated tennis courts, improved and expanded concessions, updated playground and family picnic facilities, a pedestrian esplanade, enhanced native landscaping, and enhanced parking lot lighting
This four phase project is expected to be completed in December 2015 and the park will remain open during all phases of construction.
The Beach University, a free community education program which has been around for several years, explored topics such as sea turtles, shorebird nesting, environmental protection and water quality. Beach University will return in 2016, according to Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources staff.
