Celebrated for their brilliant interpretation of new music and collaboration with cutting-edge contemporary composers, Angela and Jennifer Chun have forged a niche in the music world as a violin duo of uncommon distinction. They will perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s concerto for two violins in d minor, BWV 1043, considered one of Bach’s most exquisite works. The Venice Symphony Orchestra will accompany them.

(Venice, FL) The Venice Symphony presents the celebrated violinist duo, Angela and Jennifer Chun, Friday, March 13, at 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday, March 14, at 3:30 p.m., at the Venice Performing Arts Center, 1 Indian Ave, Venice. The duo will perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s concerto for two violins in d minor, BWV 1043, also known as the Double Violin Concerto or “Bach Double.” Tickets are $10 to $28. Celebrated for their brilliant interpretation of new music and collaboration with cutting-edge contemporary composers, Angela and Jennifer Chun have forged a niche in the music world as a violin duo of uncommon distinction. The sisters “play with an intensity and sense of purpose that few music lovers can resist,” according to Strings magazine. Their two recordings on the Harmonia Mundi label, “Fantasy” and “Bartók 44 Violin Duos” (which is one of the label’s best-selling releases for 2010), shine a spotlight on the two-violin repertoire, prompting many to agree: “They play this music so well that it makes one regret that composers have not produced more for this winning combination.” (All Music Guide).
In addition to playing favorites by Bach and Vivaldi, the sisters have brought to light duo-violin music by more contemporary composers, including Berio, Schnittke, Phillip Glass, Sebastian Currier and Arvo Pärt. In 2009, the renowned composer George Tsontakis wrote a gripping, two-violin concerto entitled “Unforgettable” for them, which the Chuns premiered at the Aspen Music Festival to commemorate the Aspen Institute’s 60th anniversary. In 2013, the sisters performed as guest artists to open the Metropolitan Opera’s U.S. premiere of “Two Boys,” written by the renowned young American composer Nico Muhly (considered by many to be one of the most important composers of his generation) with whom the sisters have collaborated on other projects. The three artists will release an album of his new works on Harmonia Mundi later this year.
Angela and Jennifer Chun are string mentors at the Royal Academy of Music in London and make their homes in New York and London. Their brother, Dr. Steve Chun, is the medical director of Sarasota Pain Associates in Lakewood Ranch. Angela Chun performs on a 1734 Domenico Montagnana and Jennifer on 1662 Nicolo Amati known as “The Goding.”
In this concert, they will perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s concerto for two violins in d minor, BWV 1043, also known as the Double Violin Concerto or “Bach Double.” Considered one of the J.S. Bach’s most famous works, the concerto is characterized by the subtle yet expressive relationship between the violins throughout the work. The Venice Symphony Orchestra will accompany them.
