| With her debut EP “Room 93” just released, Halsey reveals the final installment of the EP’s accompanying four-part video series with “Empty Gold“. The clip concludes a quartet of connected videos envisioned by Halsey to showcase her cinematic vision for “Room 93” and the fictional hotel room in which each song and video takes place.
“I wanted to show off the music by giving each song its own short film” explains Halsey, who described her inspiration for the EP in a recent interview with Billboard: “A hotel room is almost like a prop place. I spent the past year of my life in and out of hotel rooms and I’ve formed relationships with people out of hotel rooms. It’s kind of an exhausting and fascinating and interesting phenomenon.”
The video series follows a cast of interweaving characters and the life events taking place within this fictional room. Halsey drew on her love of classic 90’s cult teen cinema to create the gritty, surreal aesthetic of the collection. “I just admire the raw, stark, teen dream romance of the genre,” says Halsey. “The films feel untouched and unpolished; and most importantly authentic. That’s what I’m seeking to do through this project; create something authentic yet otherworldly.” “The strongest reference is Harmony Korine’s “Gummo,” she reveals. “Ghost” references it heavily through my character (which is modeled after Chloe Sevigny’s in the film) and “Empty Gold” recreates the opening scene.
Prior to “Empty Gold” Halsey released videos for EP tracks “Hurricane“, “Trouble“, and the breakout single “Ghost” (in which Halsey stars). A fifth track, “Is There Somewhere” serves as an intro to the EP concept and therefore does not have a video.
“Room 93” debuted at #2 on the iTunes Alternative Chart and #33 overall upon its release this week and is out now on Astralwerks.
