Angels in America Returns to Juilliard
Tony Kushner (above left) was playwright in residence at Juilliard when Part 1 of his Angels in America first graced the stage—as a fourth-year production (above right). In those 1992 performances, Michael Stuhlbarg (at left) played Louis Ironson and Robert Sella was his lover, the AIDS-infected Prior Walter. The following year the play went on to win a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award. This month, Angels in America, Part 1: Millennium Approaches returns to Juilliard, again performed by the fourth-year class. Kathryn Shattuck caught up with Kushner in an exclusiveJournal interview. Photo by Silvia Lelli

Scappucci Bows at Her Alma Mater
Speranza Scappucci (above) studied piano at Juilliard but is now an up-and-coming conductor. On November 19, she makes her debut on the Juilliard podium leading Rossini’s infrequently performed two-act comedy Il Turco in Italia, the first performance of the Juilliard Opera season. Read about Scappucci’s journey to conducting and the production.

Remembering Marian Seldes
Acclaimed actress and teacher Marian Seldes, who died in October at age 86, was one of the original faculty members when Juilliard’s Drama Division opened in 1969. Beloved by students and fellow faculty members alike, Seldes (who’s seen above teaching a class in the 1970s) is remembered in a special tribute compiled by drama faculty member Shana Komitee.
