Art Center Sarasota’s March Exhibition Cycle:
“Confluence: Israel”

This exhibition cycle features four exhibits showcasing works by emerging Israeli artists, fine art jewelry, a collaboration with Goodwill Manasota and ThisWeekinSarasota.com of repurposed donated artwork, and an open,
all-media, juried exhibition.
(Sarasota, FL) Art Center Sarasota’s 2013-2014 exhibition season, entitled “Incredible Journey,” continues with the third exhibit cycle of the season, which runs March 13-April 25, 2014. It features “Confluence: Israel,” an exhibit of works by emerging Israeli artists in Gallery 1; “The Secret Life of Jewelry,” featuring fine art jewelry in Gallery 2; “MASHterpieces,” a collaboration with Goodwill Manasota and ThisWeekinSarasota.com of repurposed donated artwork in Gallery 3; and “One World,” an open, all-media, juried exhibition in Gallery 4. “Confluence: Israel” showcases works by young, emerging Israeli artists. Lisa Berger, the center’s executive director, explains that this exhibition evolved from a collaboration with The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee. “It will be the first exhibit of its kind in our area,” she says. “The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee has wanted to produce an exhibition of Israeli art for a long time. We’re thrilled to help make that happen.” Berger explains that her team worked closely with Shosh Dagan, a leading Israeli curator, to showcase a broad spectrum of Israeli artists working in a variety of mediums, including painting, sculpture, photography, drawing, woodwork, video, jewelry and embroidery. “The media often depicts Israel through the lens of conflict—but there’s far more to it than that,” says Berger. “This exhibit offers a close-up look at the inventive, cutting-edge work that Israeli artists are producing.” She notes that one of the artists, Ohad Zlotnick, who will be coming to Sarasota, creates three dimensional metal sculptures of Hebrew letters. Zlotnick will give an artist’s talk on Friday, March 14, at 2 p.m.
“MASHterpieces” is the result of another collaboration—this time with Goodwill Manasota and ThisWeekinSarasota.com. Berger explains that selected artists were asked to choose a piece of art found at a Goodwill retail store. They then transformed that piece by adding elements that are, according to Berger, “humorous, irreverent, ironic and totally unexpected while keeping the integrity of the original piece.” ThisWeekinSarasota.com will document the process, through video and online editorial, from original art selection to interviews with the artists.
“The Secret Life of Jewelry” features contemporary art jewelry pieces from internationally recognized jewelry artists, including American artists Christine J. Brandt, Andrea Williams, Cheryl Eve Acosta and Kathleen Carricaburu. Works by two Israeli jewelers, Vered Babai and Edda Vardimon, will also be featured. Using materials that range from metals to sticks and stones, these artists push the boundaries of wearable art. Each artist will have approximately six to eight pieces on display.
“One World” is an open, all-media juried exhibition. Online submissions are available on Art Center Sarasota’s website, www.artsarasota.org/callartists, February 1-28. Hand-carried submissions will be accepted at Art Center Sarasota on March 4, 2014, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The juror for this exhibition is Kristin DuFrain, the curator/registrar at GraphicStudio.
Upcoming at Art Center Sarasota:
From April 28 through May 10, 2014, Art Center Sarasota will showcase the “North Sarasota County Schools Spring Art Show,” featuring works by art students in grades K-12.
The fifth exhibition cycle runs May 22-June 27, 2014, and features “Unconventional Inventions,” a partnership with Sun Hydraulics, Architectural Salvage and the Sarasota public school system, showcasing kinetic sculpture by area high school students in Gallery 1. An exhibit presented by the Lemur Conservation Foundation will be in Gallery 2; a Black Box Projects installation in Gallery 3; and “Perspectives,” an open, all-media, juried exhibition in Gallery 4.
The “Second Annual Florida Flavor Exhibition,” an all-media, juried exhibition highlighting the talented artists of the Sunshine State, runs July 10-August 15, 2014, in all four of the center’s galleries.
Closing the season, August 28-September 30, 2014, is “Organic Mechanic,” featuring the sculptures of Russ Bellamy in Gallery 1; “Back Roads to Back Homes,” featuring Florida photography in Gallery 2; a Black Box Projects installation in Gallery 3; and “Coming Home,” a members-only, all-media, juried exhibition in Gallery 4.

About Art Center Sarasota
Art Center Sarasota was the first arts and cultural institution in Sarasota. It was founded in 1926 as the “Sarasota Art Association” by Marcia Rader, the art supervisor for the Sarasota County schools district. In the early years, the group met monthly and sponsored exhibits in rented facilities. The Association was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in 1943 and has been in its current location in the Sarasota Bayfront Cultural District since 1949.
