All the way from Germany to play for the South County Jazz Club.  Tenor sax phenomenon Klaus Bader and his guitarist friend Peter Starkmann will be accompanied by piano legend Johnny Varro, Bassist Don Mopsick and drummer Tony Martin at the Venice Art Center.

SCJC member and noted jazz journalist Dr. Bob Byler writes “Klaus Bader’s avocational musical career is remarkable. He formed The Chicagoans in his late ‘teens, and it won a competition in 1961. He also is in the Oldtime Jazz Quintet and on bass sax in the New Storyville Jazz Band. He has played with many others, and I heard him at the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee in 2004 on bass sax with the Flat Foot Stompers. His service to jazz includes the “Oldtime” program on Germany’s SWF radio station (the station with the greatest coverage in Germany) from 1986 through 1994 and serving as president for Jazz Initiative Stuttgart since 1999. He has been visiting Florida’s Suncoast since the early 1990s and been a guest player with many bands in the area. Few groups I’ve heard are as lyrical and enjoyable as saxophonist Bader and his highly-talented Floridian associates. Their eclectic repertoire also adds some treasures to my collection. This rates A+ in my gradebook.” Byler also notes that Starkmann “Plays and looks like the legendary Django Reinhardt.”

Bader had a memorable meeting with Lorri Hafer as he sat in during her SCJC concert at the Venice Art Center last season. This year Klaus and Peter are flying all the way from Germany for their appearance for the South County Jazz Club.
