ODAIR ASSAD IN RECITAL 92Y CONCERTS AT SUBCULTURE
Launching the second season of 92Y Concerts at SubCulture, Brazilian guitarist Odair Assad gives his first 92Y solo recital in the intimate, downtown space of SubCulture. His program includes pieces recently written for him by Gismonti and Brouwer, Brazilian jazz-pop songs of Garôto and Piazzolla’s Argentine nuevo tangos, among others. For nearly 50 years Odair has performed concerts with his brother Sérgio as part of the highly acclaimed Assad Brothers Duo. The pair still enjoys an active concert and recording partnership and celebrate their 50th anniversary with the release of a new album and worldwide tour in 2015. The brothers appear in concert at 92Y on Saturday, May 9, 2015. This concert is Odair Assad’s only solo New York recital this season. He arrives in New York after a European tour which began in Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, followed by concerts in Denmark, Poland, Belgium and Switzerland. Following a successful North American tour in April 2013, the Trio returns to the United States with concerts in New York City, San Diego, Irvine, CA, Eau Claire, WI and Gettysburg, PA. The Smetana Trio’s 2014 tour is supported by the Czech Center New York where Hanna Arie-Gaifman, Director of 92Y’s Tisch Center for the Arts, moderates a conversation with the Trio on October 20, 2014. Smetana Trio SUK Piano Trio in C minor, Op. 2 Tickets $15 (Age 35 & under), $35 JERUSALEM QUARTET & FRIENDS The Jerusalem Quartet returns to 92Y for a three-concert series showcasing some of Brahms’ most personal and powerful chamber works, entitled Intimate Brahms. These three concerts mark the Jerusalem Quartet’s only New York appearances during the 2014/15 season and their first since their sold-out Shostakovich cycle in March 2013. They released a Brahms CD in April 2013 and have recently given other Brahms residencies in Paris, Hamburg, Rotterdam and Schwarzenberg, Austria. Their U.S. engagements prior to 92Y include Buffalo, Indianapolis, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Houston and Cincinnati. The Quartet is joined by pianist Inon Barnatan who performs selected sonatas with individual Quartet members at all three concerts including the Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 34, clarinetist Sharon Kam (October 23) for the composer’s Quintet for Clarinet and Strings in B minor, Op. 115, and violist Hsin-Yun Huang (October 25) who performs the Quintet for Strings in G major, Op. 111. 92Y- Kaufmann Concert Hall BRAHMS String Quartet in C minor, Op. 51, No. 1 Saturday, October 25, 8:00 PM BRAHMS String Quartet in A minor, Op. 51, No. 2 Wednesday, October 29, 7:30 PM BRAHMS String Quartet in B-flat major, Op. 67 Tickets $25 (Age 35 & under), $35, $52, $62 IN CONVERSATION WITH LEON FLEISHER On Starting with Brahms Thriving in a sustained career as conductor, soloist and chamber musician for over 70 years, legendary pianist Leon Fleisher’s musical pedigree is remarkable. His son Julian Fleisher, named “the human iPod” by The Baltimore Sun, joins him in the Weill Art Gallery October 26, December 14 and February 8 discussing Fleisher’s life and career through the lens of music. The series, entitled Living Through Music, begins with the topic of Brahms in conjunction with the Jerusalem Quartet’s series on Brahms’ chamber music. Future conversations include discussions on contemporary music (December 14) and Schubert (February 8).
