Limited Engagement Marks Final New York Run!

New York, NY (August 20, 2014)  For the final tour of The Old Man and The Old Moon, the endlessly imaginative PigPen Theatre Co. brings their folk-rock fable to The New Victory Theater from September 26 – October 13, 2014. This three-week, Off-Broadway run will be the last chance to see the company perform this celebrated work in New York.

Fresh off a national concert tour and a run at Williamstown Theatre Festival, PigPen Theatre Co. comes to Times Square to open the New Victory 2014-15 season with The Old Man and The Old Moon, an epic tale about a man who must abandon his duties of filling up the moon with liquid light so he can cross the seas in search of his missing wife. Scaled up to fill the New Vic proscenium stage, this luminously lo-fi spectacle features new puppetry sequences and script changes for a fast-paced single act play with music.

With a rollicking array of ever-changing characters, inventive theatrical effects and infectious contemporary folk music, The Old Man and The Old Moon premiered at the Gym at Judson in New York City in the fall of 2012. After a script/music workshop at Williamstown Theatre Festival in the summer of 2013, PigPen embarked on a collaboration with Chicago-based director Stuart Carden to restage the show and open the 2013 season at Writers Theatre in Chicago, where it sold out and extended its engagement last fall. PigPen is thrilled to return home and perform this fantastical, song-filled play for New York audiences.

“We’re really excited to be on 42nd Street, performing at the New Vic with a show that means so much to us as both a theater company and a band,” says Arya Shahi on behalf of the group. He adds, “We see this as the final leg of a two year journey that started in the basement of Judson church in Washington Square Park, and now we have new projects to begin working on and much to look forward to in the future.” PigPen Theatre Co. is currently under commission to write and develop two new musical plays in their unique style, including an original work for Manhattan Theatre Club and Ars Nova as a part of The Writers Room program.

Touring both as a band and theater company, the young actor/musicians just completed their busiest concert touring schedule to date. After a successful two-month residency at Schubas Tavern in Chicago, they hit the road headlining folk rock concerts in over 30 cities across the United States with their debut album, Bremen, and follow up EP, The Way I’m Running. Notable stops included The Echo, Lincoln Hall, The Ann Arbor Folk Festival, Music Hall of Williamsburg, The Sinclair and at SXSW.

The Old Man and The Old Moon is written, directed, produced by and stars the seven members of the PigPen Theatre Co.: Alex Falberg, Ben Ferguson, Curtis Gillen, Ryan Melia, Matt Nuernberger, Arya Shahi and Dan Weschler. The production’s creative team includes Stuart Carden (Direction), Lydia Fine (Design and Puppetry), Bart Cortright (Design), Mikhail Fiksel (Sound Design) and the PigPen Theatre Co. (Direction and Puppetry).
