Gidon Kremer Joins Kremerata Baltica for 70th Birthday Celebration in “Russia: Masks & Faces”

Kremerata Baltica returns, with Gidon Kremer as soloist, to 92Y for a program celebrating Kremer’s 70th birthday. This evening’s multimedia program, “Russia: Masks & Faces” reflects Kremer’s personal take on Russia today and its artistic heritage, featuring the music of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, Polish-Russian composer Mieczysław Weinberg, Tchaikovsky and Valentin Silverstrov, as well as Mussorgsky, whose Pictures at an Exhibition is arranged for chamber orchestra and features visuals of original paintings by Russian artist, writer and social commentator Maxim Kantor. A pre-concert talk with Gidon Kremer will be held at 7 pm, with journalist and musicologist Solomon Volkov (editor of Testimonial: The Memoirs of Dmitri Shostakovich).

In 1997, renowned violinist Gidon Kremer presented the first-ever performance by Kremerata Baltica, a new chamber orchestra comprising outstanding young players from the Baltic states—Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia—selected by Kremer through a rigorous audition process. Since then, the group has become known for its adventurous and creative programming and its acclaimed recordings.

Elias String Quartet Gives 92Y Debut

Of the Elias String Quartet, the Philadelphia Inquirer remarked, “Few quartets at any stage of their evolution have this much personality” and “this is real quartet playing…in every way a single stunning organism.” The Boston Musical Intelligencer commended: “the most satisfyingly and electrically alert performance of a Beethoven quartet that I have ever heard.”

Formed while the artists were students together at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England, the Elias has garnered rave reviews of its live performances and recordings from press around the globe. Known for their critically-acclaimed complete Beethoven cycles, presented in Wigmore Hall and elsewhere throughout the UK and the US, the Elias String Quartet’s 92Y debut features Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 13 in B-flat Major, Op. 130 with the original Grosse Fuge finale, Op. 133. The Elias explains, “Fugal writing in its various forms is a prominent feature of this program. [Works by Purcell and Bartók] lay the ground for the Grosse Fuge at the other end of the program, where Beethoven takes us into one of the most challenging fugues of all.”

92Y’s Sixth Guitar Marathon:
“The Innovation of Transcriptions”

92Y’s sixth all-day Guitar Marathon, The Innovation of Transcriptions, takes place in two parts on February 25, featuring a roster of the world’s greatest classical guitarists in performances of groundbreaking transcriptions that push the boundaries of their instrument—from Rhapsody in Blue to works by Mussorgsky and Philip Glass. The New York Times called the Guitar Marathon “a refuge for classical-guitar aficionados… that, since 2004, has brought together established players and hot newcomers, usually in carefully assembled thematic programs.” This year’s marathon participants include Sérgio & Odair Assad, Eden-Stell Duo, Paul Galbraith and Benjamin Verdery, among others, as well as the 92Y debuts of the Brasil Guitar Duo, Jorge Caballero, Dublin Guitar Quartet and the VIDA Quartet. This program includes tributes to the influential and beloved French guitarist, composer and arranger Roland Dyens, who passed away in October 2016.
