(Sarasota, Florida) The Sarasota Concert Association’s free Music Matinees series continues its 2017-2018 season with State College of Florida Chamber Choir, conducted by Melodie Dickerson, Wednesday, March 28, noon, in the Grand Foyer at the Van Wezel Performing Art Hall in Sarasota. The ensemble is known for performing Renaissance madrigals, cutting-edge choral works, contemporary jazz tunes and traditional choral literature. This concert’s program includes a 13th-century chant, a 15th-century Spanish folk song, and songs by Jean Berger, Erik Esenvalds, Gyorgy Orban and more. The concert is free and open to the public. The State College of Florida Chamber Choir is an auditioned mixed voice ensemble of approximately 20 voices that regularly performs both for on-campus concerts and official programs, as well as off-campus events. Under the direction of Melodie Dickerson, the SCF Chamber Choir presents a varied repertoire of music—from Renaissance madrigals to cutting-edge choral works to contemporary jazz tunes, as well as traditional choral literature. In this concert, the group will perform nine works, including “Veni Sancte Spiritu,” a 13th-century chant; “Mad Madrigals” by Jerry F. Davidson; “Immortal Bach” by Knut Nystedt, “Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine” by Eric Whitacre; and “The Eyes of All Wait Upon Thee” by Jean Berger.

Melodie Dickerson, soprano, is in her 14th year as director of Choral/ Vocal Studies and Music Chair at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota, where she conducts concert and chamber choirs, music theatre ensemble and maintains a private voice studio. She also performs in and directs musicals, concert events and plays around the country. A past president of Tampa Bay NATS, member of ACDA and AEA, Dickerson regularly serves as a vocal adjudicator, coach and accompanist in both musical theatre and classical arenas.

Music Matinees is a series of free concerts featuring performances by high-caliber, area-based artists. The series is designed to offer a wide variety of musical genres, including classical, folk, and jazz, featuring both vocal and instrumental performers. The 2018 Music Matinees concert season concludes with “keyboard tour de force” pianist Tom Purviance (Wednesday, April 18).

All Music Matinee performances are at noon at the Beatrice Friedman Symphony Center, 709 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. The series is free and open to the public. Seating is open; no reservations taken.
