FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY PUBLISHES ITS FIRST OPEN-ACCESS DIGITAL TEXTBOOK

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Florida State University Libraries’ Office of Digital Research and Scholarship is proud to announce the publishing of its first book-length publication, hosted by the Libraries’ open access publishing program.

The digital publication, “Integrating Theory, Research, and Practice in Vocational Psychology: Current Status and Future Directions,” contains 20 peer-reviewed papers that examine the challenges and opportunities for integrating theory, research and practice in vocational psychology from the perspectives of theorists, researchers, practitioners and journal editors. It was edited by faculty in the FSU College of Education’s Career Counseling program and produced in collaboration with the college’s Office of Communications & Recruitment.

“This volume is important not just because it is the first book published by FSU Libraries, but also because it is a symbolic affirmation of broader efforts to make FSU scholarship more discoverable, impactful and sustainable,” said James P. Sampson, associate dean for faculty development and professor in the College of Education.

The book is released under a Creative Commons license, allowing any reader to access, copy and distribute the book’s content at no cost and without permission of the authors.

“In light of the ever-rising cost of access to commercially published literature, it is essential that scholars assert greater control over the means of scholarly production,” Sampson said. “This book represents a milestone in the natural evolution toward this lofty but necessary objective at FSU. We hope that this knowledge will lead to improved science and career interventions in the field of career counseling.”

FSU Libraries are proud to have partnered with the College of Education on this important publishing project and hope that the success of this project will provide a foundation for future publishing partnerships with authors and editors on campus.
