In 2008, two of Australia’s leading musician/producers, LUKE STEELE and NICK LITTLEMORE, created a vision that seemed to come from an alternative reality – a post-apocalyptic psychedelic adventure known as Empire of the Sun. The resulting album, Walking On A Dream, went on to sell a million-plus copies worldwide and contained the singles “We Are The People,” “Standing on the Shore” and the RIAA certified Platinum single “Walking On A Dream.” NYLON hailed Walking On A Dream as “sublime” while Rolling Stone put the title track on its “Hot List” and Under The Radar noted: “Walking on a Dream is an album that wraps itself around your brain.” Eight ARIA awards (including Album of The Year) and two BRIT nominations (including Best International Album) followed.
More recently, Empire of The Sun has released a belated video for “Celebrate,” a popular track from sophomore album Ice On The Dune. Shot on location by Luke Steele and the Empire touring team, the colorful clip features Emperor Steele himself, wandering the brightly-lit streets of Seoul, Korea as he beams a mystic neon-blue energy. It can be seen HERE. The video features various locations in Seoul including Gwangjang Market, Nakwon Music Arcade, Namdaemun Market, Shincheon and Noryangjin Fisheries Wholesale Market. Ice On The Dune, the follow-up Walking On A Dream, saw its U.S. release in June 2013 via Astralwerks. “Everything about Empire of the Sun is larger than life: The band name, the futuristic stage personas, the Dune-inspired album art and – most importantly – the music,” said Rolling Stone.
After wowing crowds across the country, including stand-out performances at this year’s Firefly Music Festival, Mysteryland, and Rock In Rio USA, Empire of The Sun will embark on their most ambitious U.S. West Coast tour to date this September. The headline run includes performances at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco on September 19 and the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on September 20. The Empire live show became the highlight of many summer festivals with its larger-than-life production featuring stunning visuals, dancing swordfish girls, cryo-bazookas and otherworldly special effects. SPIN praised the band’s Coachella performance, observing: “The easiest way to blast off wasn’t with MDMA, LSD, peyote, or any other mind-expanding drug. It was with sci-fi Australian dance outfit Empire of the Sun, whose set at the Outdoor Theatre was out of this world.”
