Diverse Lineup of Lunchtime Concerts at Washington Square Announced by Eastman Community Music School

 

ROCHESTER, NY – Eastman at Washington Square has announced its Fall 2017 series of free performances that will take place at the First Universalist Church on the corner of South Clinton and Court Streets. The series is presented by Eastman Community Music School (ECMS) in cooperation with the First Universalist Church of Rochester. The performances will feature a wide variety of chamber music ensembles, performing works from Rachmaninoff to Shostakovich to spirituals from Zimbabwe.   Each half-hour informal concert features talented Eastman School of Music and Eastman Community Music School faculty members, students, alumni, and friends of the school.

Audience members are encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch to enjoy while listening to the performances.  Each concert begins at 12:15 and ends at approximately 12:45, and admission is free.

The series was launched in 1994 by leaders from the Eastman School of Music and the First Universalist Church. The first director was ECMS Piano Instructor Howard Spindler; the current director is Dr. Irina Lupines, Instructor in Accompanying at the Eastman School of Music and Instructor in Piano for the Eastman Community Music School.

The concert schedule through December:

October 19An Afternoon with Rachmaninoff  – Come and hear soprano Yunjin Audrey Kim and pianist Evelyn Wing-Yan Lam in a recital of vocal and piano music by Sergei Rachmaninoff

October 26Composer David Temperley – A composition for violin and piano by Eastman faculty member David Temperley, performed by Soo Yeon Kim, violin and David Temperley, piano.

November 2Soulful Violin –Eastman Professor of Violin Mikhail Kopelman and pianist Anna Gourfinkel perform music of Bloch, Smetana, and Brahms.

November 9Lunch with the Great Romantics – Don’t miss hearing Arsen Jamkochian, Alison Chang, and Enzo Medel, pianists from the studio of Eastman Professor of Piano Natalya Antonova, perform music by Schumann, Chopin, and Liszt.

November 16 Ogni sorti – Enjoy the sounds of sackbuts – an early version of the trombone — as they perform early 17th-century instrumental music from Venice.  This concert is presented in conjunction with the Rochester Early Music Festival.

November 23 – No concert. Happy Thanksgiving!

November 30Trio “Slavia” – Join us for music of Shostakovich. performed by violinist Oleg Lupines, cellist Svetlana Garitselov. and pianist Irina Lupines.

December 7Mbira dzeMugomo Guru – The Eastman Mbira Ensemble returns to perform music from the Shona spiritual tradition of Zimbabwe.

December 14‘Tis the Season – The Onyx Clarinet Quartet: Laurie Dobmeier, TerryAnn Gerberm, Roxanne Woy, and Alan Woy perform songs of the season!

Concerts resume January 4, 2017.

Please note that if Rochester City Schools are closed due to inclement weather, the church building will also be closed and the concert will be cancelled.
