BACKSTAGE AT THE PLAYERS CLOSES SEASON WITH

THE DARK COMEDY “THE LYONS”

Sarasota, FL – Backstage at The Players will close its fourth season with the ferocious black comedy “The Lyons” from April 9-19 in The Players Theatre’s studio space. Written by Nicky Silver, “The Lyons” was a hit both on and off Broadway, hailed by critics and audience alike for its scathing humor and honesty. The play is intended for mature audiences only.

Story: Family patriarch Ben Lyons lies dying in a Manhattan hospital. His wife Rita flips through decorating magazines planning a living room makeover. It’s clear that Ben and Rita have been at war for years, and even Ben’s impending demise has brought about no truce. When they’re joined by their troubled adult children, Lisa and Curtis, all efforts at a pleasant visit or a sentimental goodbye are soon abandoned. After Curtis’ ill-considered move to fabricate a relationship ends disastrously, the remaining Lyons take their first tentative steps towards new connections in this darkly comedic tale.

The cast includes Rosalind Cramer, Neil Levine, Rhonda Hewitt, Ross Boehringer, Bill Morris and Kaylene McCaw. Ann Gundersheimer is directing assisted by stage manager Cindy Schlotterback.

This is the last play of BATP’s 2014-15 season. The intimate alternative black box theater, launched in 2011, presents stimulating, bold, contemporary theater in a spirit of adventure for artist and audience alike. Past productions have included works by Edward Albee, Annie Baker, David Mamet, David Ives and Marsha Norman.

The 2015-16 Backstage season will be announced in April.
