Classroom Grant Awards Reception
 
More than 350 teachers, donors and volunteers celebrated the 25th annual Classroom Grant Awards sponsored by Argosy University on December 4th at Michael’s On East. Susan Scott, Education Foundation executive director, announced grant awards totaling $185,465 for 227 projects developed by teachers from 41 public schools in the district.

 

The Argosy Principal’s Award including a check for $500 was presented by Argosy President Dr. Sandra to Principal Brandon Johnson from Lamarque Elementary School. Rotary Club of Sarasota president Judy Bennett closed the ceremonies with a final drawing of the Rotary Club of Sarasota’s Jim & Jean Henry Teacher’s Award; McIntosh Middle School’s Amy Proch-Moore won the honor which included an unrestricted cash gift of $500.

 

Three speakers – including Wilkinson Elementary School teacher Tiffany Lloyd, Fruitville Elementary School principal Dr. Laura Kingsley, and longtime Education Foundation supporter Lisa Kates – testified to the impact the foundation’s Classroom Grant Program has on student learning, teachers, grant sponsors, and the community as a whole.

Google’s “Made with Code” project recently featured former Education Foundation Science Fair winner, Brittany Wenger. Brittany, a three-time Science Fair winner and recipient of the Dart Foundation Award, represented Sarasota County in the prestigious Intel International Science and Engineering Fair as well. Click here to see Brittany’s full feature.

Texcellence Celebrates Computer Science Education Week

Computer Science Education Week kicked off December 8th and runs through December 14th. In an effort to raise awareness of the growing computer science field, students from all around the world are participating in the “Hour of Code“. Designed to prove that any student can learn the basics of coding, students in the Digital Learning Labs are encouraged to participate. Over the past few months, several Texcellence Digital Learning Labs have been the hub of six-week long “Coding” classes. Feel free to stop by the Digital Learning Lab at Selby Library this Saturday, December 13th from 2-4PM to check out the final coding and programming class of 2014. (Additional coding classes are planned for 2015)
