Join us for our exciting live star talk, Stelliferous Live – this month with Samantha Sprague, South Florida Museum Curator of Education.Stelliferous Live takes place the fourth Wednesday of every month at 7 pm in the Bishop Planetarium. Each month, we’ll take a look at the upcoming month’s night skies, then enjoy a discussion about current events in astronomy. Past topics include the Higgs Boson, the search for extrasolar planets and the future of space exploration.

The South Florida Museum is pleased to present Film Fridays, our exciting film program presenting the best movies you’ve (n)ever seen – most Fridays at 6 pm. Enjoy watching your favorite American musicians on the big screen in these intriguing and insightful documentaries that will have your toes tapping and fingers snapping! Everyone from Elvis to Neil Young to the Ramones are featured in these rollicking portraits of American musical excellence. In the fall of 2005, Neil Young returned to the sound and style of his iconic 1972 album Harvest with Prairie Wind. This modern classic documentary was shot during a two-night performance by Neil Young at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, the original home of the Grand Ole Opry. Proving that it’s neither better to burn out nor fade away, Neil Young: Heart of Gold works both as a concert film and a meditation on mortality.

The South Florida Museum presents
Dr. Geek’s Science Fair
Saturday, September 27, 10 am – 7 pm
Come experience man’s technology of the past, present and future! A unique blend of science and fiction, this event combines a classic science fiction convention with a science fair. Travel back in time in H.G. Well’s Time Machine to explore technology of the past then tour the futuristic technology with exhibitors such as NASA, USF Robotics and Bright House Networks. The day’s events will include special Planetarium presentations, discussion panels and exhibitors located throughout the Museum. Students ages 6-16 will have the chance to compete in the inaugural Geek Games which blend fundamental STEM principles with the creativity of art and literature. Special performance by Steampunk/ Dr. Who rock group The Ken Spivey Band!

Family Night at the Museum presents
“National Fossil Day”
Saturday, October 4, 10 am – 8 pm
(Please Note: National Fossil Day takes place on October 15, 2014 – however, the Museum is celebrating the event on Saturday, October 4 during our monthly Family Night.)
National Fossil Day is a celebration organized by the National Park Service to promote public awareness and stewardship of fossils, as well as to foster a greater appreciation of their scientific and educational values. The South Florida Museum is excited to be a host institution this year and to partner with local and state agencies, organizations and clubs. Guests can come and meet real paleontologists and geologists who work everyday to uncover the secrets fossils reveal about our ancient Earth.
Programs will include:
- Speaker panels and exhibitors throughout the day.
- Special Screening of Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure at 4:15 pm in the Bishop Planetarium (a National Geographic film, unrated family friendly, 40 min).
- Junior Paleontologist Badge Program presented by the De Soto National Memorial Park Rangers.
- Outdoor Fossil dig for kids sponsored by Mosaic.
- Fossil Exhibitions from the Florida Museum of Natural History, Florida Paleontological Society, Florida Fossil Hunters, the Southwest Florida Fossil Society and many others.

Museum admission will be half price ALL DAY on Saturday,
October 4 to celebrate this nationwide event.

“How to Train Your Dragon”
For thousands of years humans have been digging up large, strange bones of ancient creatures. Today we call them fossils and give the creatures names like Mastodon, Stegosaurus and Smilodon. But ancient man created fantastic mythology to explain these monstrous bones. One such story tells of giant, reptilian creatures that could fly and breathe fire! Come learn about the historical roots of these fierce, winged creatures and how, if at all, you too could train a dragon. “Roadside Geology with Harley Means”
Walt Disney World, the moon landing, shark attacks – these are things the average person readily associates with Florida, but geology… Not so much. From the Panhandle through the Central Lakes District all the way to the Dry Tortugas, Harvey Means, co-author of Roadside Geology of Florida and Assistant State Geologist, will lead you through a world of cavernous limestone, roiling springheads, and rock strata containing the remains of some of the strangest animals that ever walked the Earth.
