Brooklyn, NY (March 12, 2014) – WBA International Welterweight Champion Luis Collazo will travel to his homeland of Puerto Rico to attend Saturday night’s Danny Garcia vs. Mauricio Herrera unified lightweightworld championship bout at Coliseo de Ruben Rodriguez in Baymon live on SHOWTIME®.He will also be visiting family and friends that still live on the island. 

 

 

“I’m going to the fight as a boxing fan, because it’s always great to see the Puerto Rican fans, they are amazing,” said Collazo.  “Danny was ringside when I fought Victor Ortiz, and I want to be there when he makes his Puerto Rico fighting debut. It’s going to be a great fight.”

 

Born in Brooklyn and of Puerto Rican descent, Collazo has family in Puerto Rico including his mother, grandmother, brothers, cousins and nieces and nephews, “I visited Puerto Rico five months ago, I try to come as often as possible, but sometimes it is hard with my training schedule,” said Collazo.

 

In honor to his beloved Puerto Rico, Collazo has the Puerto Rican flag embroidered on his trunks every time he fights. “I’m proud of my roots, and I’m not afraid to show it.”

 

A Garcia vs. Collazo fight would give passionate boxing fans something to cheer about. Not only is Puerto Rico home to some of the most passionate boxing fans, Philadelphia and Brooklyn, Garica and Collazo’s respective hometowns, also boast some incredibly passionate followers of the sweet science.

 

“I would love to fight Danny when he moves up in weight,” Collazo continued.  “He’s a great young champion but I would give him something he’s never seen before. It would be a great battle of Puerto Rican champions.”

 

Collazo is eyeing the best fighters in his division.  Amir Khan is still in the mix for his next fight, but his ultimate goal is a chance to fight pound-for-pound king Floyd “Money” Mayweather.
