WalletHub Study: 2015’s Metro Areas with the Best & Worst Budgeters

With roughly three in five adult Americans not maintaining a budget and 14% lacking a solid sense of their monthly spending habits, the leading personal finance social network WalletHub conducted an in-depth analysis of 2015’s Metro Areas with the Best and Worst Budgeters.

Using the most recent data available, we ranked 150 metropolitan statistical areas in the United States to gauge the overall budgeting capability of their residents. We did so by examining 16 key metrics, ranging from the average credit score to the percentage of unbanked households.

Key Stats

  • Residents of the Brownsville, TX area have three times more non-mortgage debt (as a percentage of their median income) than people in the Washington, D.C. area.
  • Miami’s foreclosure rate in 2013 was 9 times higher than Austin’s.
  • People in the Laredo, TX area rely on credit twice as heavily as those in the Sioux City, IA area.
  • Five of the six Georgia metro areas included in this report placed in the bottom 10 nationally.
