About the Artists
Multiple-award-winning pianist and ICMA Artist of the Year in 2012, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet is renowned for his performances of works by Debussy, Ravel, Prokofiev, Bartók, Beethoven, and Haydn. He regularly works with conductors such as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Pierre Boulez, Daniele Gatti, Valery Gergiev, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Andris Nelsons, and Iván Fischer. An equally active recitalist and chamber musician, Mr. Bavouzet regularly performs at London’s Southbank Centre, Cité de la Musique in Paris, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Brussels’ BOZAR, Schwetzinger Festspiele, Moscow Conservatoire, and the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing, where he received the annual Classical Elites Beijing Instrumental Recital of the Year award for his complete Beethoven sonata cycle.

Particularly celebrated for his work on disc, Mr. Bavouzet has won Gramophone awards for his recording of concerto works by Debussy and Ravel (BBC Symphony Orchestra and Yan Pascal Tortelier) and for his fourth volume of Debussy’s Complete Works for Piano. His interpretations of Debussy and Ravel have also earned him two BBC Music Magazine awards and Diapason d’Or, while his first volume of Haydn’s Piano Sonatas received a Choc de l’année. Mr. Bavouzet records exclusively for the Chandos label.

A former student of Pierre Sancan at the Paris Conservatoire, Mr. Bavouzet won first prize in the International Beethoven Competition in Cologne and made his American debut through Young Concert Artists in New York in 1987. As well as his performing activities, he has made a transcription for two pianos of Debussy’s Jeux, published by Durand with a foreword by Pierre Boulez.

One of today’s most sought-after conductors, Vladimir Jurowski is acclaimed worldwide for his incisive musicianship and adventurous artistic commitment. Born in Moscow in 1972, Mr. Jurowski completed the first part of his musical studies at the Music College of the Moscow Conservatory. In 1990, he relocated with his family to Germany, continuing his studies at the Musikhochschule of Dresden and Berlin, studying conducting with Rolf Reuter and vocal coaching with Semion Skigin. In 1995, Mr. Jurowski made his international debut at the Wexford Festival conducting Rimsky-Korsakov’s May Night, and the same year he made his debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, with Nabucco.

Maestro Jurowski was appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 2003, becoming the orchestra’s Principal Conductor in September 2007. He has appeared on the podium with many of the world’s leading orchestras in both Europe and North America, including the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Berliner Philharmoniker, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Tonhalle Orchester Zurich, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, and the Staatskapelle Dresden.

Highlights of Mr. Jurowski’s 2014–2015 season and beyond include his return visits to the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw, and The Philadelphia Orchestra; tours with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and a special project with the London Sinfonietta in Moscow to celebrate the Anglo-Russian Year of Cultural Exchange. Mr. Jurowski made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1999 with Verdi’s Rigoletto and has since returned for Janáček’s Jenůfa, Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades, and Humperdink’s Hansel und Gretel. He has also conducted at the Welsh National Opera, Opera National de Paris, Teatro alla Scala, Bolshoi Theatre, Dresden Semperoper, and the Glyndebourne Opera.

One of the finest orchestras on the international stage, the London Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1932 by Sir Thomas Beecham. Since then, its principal conductors have included Sir Adrian Boult, Sir Georg Solti, Klaus Tennstedt, and Kurt Masur. In 2007, Vladimir Jurowski became the orchestra’s Principal Conductor.

The London Philharmonic Orchestra has been performing at Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall since it opened in 1951, becoming Resident Orchestra in 1992. It also has residencies in Brighton and Eastbourne, and performs regularly around the United Kingdom. The orchestra frequently tours abroad: highlights of the 2014–2015 season include appearances across Europe, including Iceland, and tours to the US (West and East Coasts), Canada, and China. The orchestra broadcasts regularly on television and radio, and has recorded soundtracks for numerous films, including The Lord of the Rings. In 2005, it began releasing live, studio, and archive recordings on its own CD label.
