VT Summer campers to present MainStage productions
The Audition and Audition Blues are wonderful romps into the zany word of casting!
(Venice, FL) Venice Theatre invites the community to attend The Audition, performed by VT’s morning campers and Audition Blues! performed by VT’s afternoon campers. Both are wonderful romps into the zany world of casting for a production. The summer camp students and teachers are proud to present these original plays by Ronald Krine Myroup, Venice Theatre’s playwright-in-residence. These productions feature approximately 65 “TheatreFest” students, in 2nd through 12th grades and will be performed on the theatre’s MainStage, July 18 at 7 p.m. and July 19 at 11 a.m. Tickets are $8 with proceeds supporting the theatre’s education and outreach programs. Myroup wrote this year’s summer productions as an ode to the process of casting. The morning session focuses on acting and the afternoon focuses on musical theatre. As the unexpected happens and the plot twists and turns, the characters’ flamboyant behaviors show themselves. With delightful music and zany characters, Myroup adds, “If you like reality TV shows, this spoof will entertain you.”
In these 4-week camps geared toward more experienced performers, the goal is to learn as much as possible about what it takes to put on a show. The students audition, rehearse and then perform a full-scale musical or play on the MainStage. “The opportunity to perform at the end of the summer rewards the students for their hard work and gives them a chance to hear the applause of an audience. It also gives parents a chance to witness the tremendous value of the TheatreFest program,” says Candace Artim, TheatreFest Administrator and the theatre’s Assistant Director of Education and Outreach. “I’m thankful to the parents and families for allowing their children to discover their creative potential,” she adds.
Sandy Davisson, Venice Theatre’s Director of Education and Outreach, comments, “The performing arts are a fun way for students to not only hone their creativity, but to learn about cooperation, discipline, problem-solving and – most importantly – their imagination. These are all skills necessary to become future leaders.”
This year’s four-week TheatreFest staff are Kelly Duyn, director and technical theatre instructor; Peter Madpak, music director; Cara Herman, teacher; and Terilyn DeNiro, choreographer. Duyn and DeNiro have grown up in Venice Theatre’s education programs. Duyn, a high school teacher in the Nashville area has returned to Venice for the last several summers to teach. DeNiro is a Venice High School student making her first outing as a choreographer. The teachers have been assisted by camp interns Hunter Cross, who has returned from college to volunteer for TheatreFest, and Cora-lie Mary, a Venice High School student.
