Ukiyo-e to Shin Hanga: Japanese Woodcuts from the Syracuse University Art Collection

Now – May 24, 2015

Foosaner Art Museum

Ukiyo-e to Shin Hanga draws from the Syracuse University’s collection of over 300 examples from this important and hugely influential art movement. The prints on view date from the height of color ukiyo-e printmaking (c1780-1868) through Japan’s Meiji period (1868-1912) to twentieth century impressions of the Shin Hanga movement (1915-1940s). Masters of this medium are represented, including the work of Utamaro, Kuniyoshi, Hokusai, Hiroshida, Tsuchiya Koitsu and Yoshida Hiroshi. The prints exemplify the soft, painterly style that is synonymous with the Japanese woodcut, and illustrates the wide range of subjects from courtesans to Kabuki theater and the Japanese landscape.

Fiddler on the Roof

Friday, May 1 – Sunday, May 17, 2015

Cocoa Village Playhouse

Winner of 9 TONY Awards when it debuted in 1964, Fiddler On The Roof is the brainchild of Broadway legends Jerome Robbins, Harold Prince, songwriters Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, and bookwriter Joseph Stein. Touching audiences worldwide with its humor, warmth and honesty, this universal show is a staple of the musical theatre canon.

Set in the little village of Anatevka, the story centers on Tevye, a poor dairyman, and his five daughters. With the help of a colorful and tight-knit Jewish community, Tevye tries to protect his daughters and instill them with traditional values in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia. Rich in historical and ethnic detail, Fiddler On The Roof’s universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy and sadness.

Through special arrangements with Music Theatre International, N.Y., N.Y.

‘Southern Accents’ Exhibition

Saturday, May 16 – Saturday, August 22, 2015

Ruth Funk Center for Textile Arts

Southern Accents is a juried quilt exhibit featuring work submitted by Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) members living in the Southeast. Participants are encouraged to find the qualities that make living in the Southeast unique and celebrate them in an art quilt. The exhibit is juried by Dr. Sandra Sider. The opening of the exhibit is held in conjunction with the inaugural regional conference “Studio to Gallery,” on the campus of Florida Institute of Technology.

The exhibition was juried by Sandra Sider of the Texas Quilt Museum in La Grange, Texas. Sider selected 43 entries out of 119 submissions that reflected aspects of the South via fashion, food, family, crafts, décor, music, literature, architecture, nature, humor, history and politics. She also invited SAQA artists from 11 southeastern states to loan additional quilts to the exhibition. Sider will give a free gallery talk at 1 p.m. on the exhibition’s opening day, May 16. Reservations are not necessary.

An Earth Odyssey

Saturday, May 23, 2015

The Scott Center

Join the Space Coast Symphony as they present An Earth Odyssey. The concert opens up with the World Premiere of Adam Lydon’s Earthscape, an exciting work with cinematic scope and dramatic flair. “Something quite curious, I believe” was Robert Schumann’s description in a letter to a friend, of the Concert Piece for four Horns and large orchestra. Konzertstuck is a thrilling tour de force for four French horns. On the heels of the breathtaking performance of The Planets in 2014, the Space Coast Symphony partners with NASA again to present a powerful performance of composer Richard Strauss’ monumental Also Sprach Zarathustra, paired with high-definition film from NASA’s stunning video catalogue of the Earth.
