Turner is ready to light up the Television Critics Association’s Winter 2016 Press Tour this morning with a preview of some of the things in store across four of its multiplatform brands – TBS, TNT, truTV and Cartoon Network. The day’s events include an executive Q&A session with TBS & TNT President Kevin Reilly and panel sessions with the stars and producers of such eagerly anticipated new shows as the TBS scripted comedies Angie Tribeca andThe Detour; the new TBS late-night series Full Frontal with Samantha Bee; TNT’s newly greenlit drama Animal Kingdom; and truTV’s first-ever scripted comedy Those Who Can’t. In addition, attendees will get an early look at clips from TNT’s upcoming drama Good Behavior. Turner will get the morning started with a special Cartoon Network breakfast celebrating the completely re-imagined The Powerpuff Girls.

Turner enters the new year with a tremendous amount of momentum after scoring a banner year in 2015. Here are just a few of the extraordinary things on tap for the Turner brands this year.

TBS will be the exclusive home of the 2016 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship Final Four including the National Semifinals on April 4 and the National Championship on April 6, marking the first time the title game has ever been presented on cable.

ELEAGUE , Turner’s new professional eSports league in partnership with WME l IMG, will launch this summer with a live fan experience and extensive coverage across multiple platforms.

TBS is set to launch seven bold new comedies over the next six months, including Angie Tribeca (Jan. 17), The Detour (April 11) and Full Frontal with Samantha Bee (Feb. 8).

TNT will begin shifting its focus toward more premium fare with such new series as Animal Kingdom and Good Behavior, both coming in 2016.

Cartoon Network will mark the global launch of its newly re-imagined The Powerpuff Girls (spring 2016), while also expanding its efforts in the Steam and Coding space.

Adult Swim will premiere the seventh season of its Emmy®-winning hit Childrens Hospital (Jan. 22) and release a mobile game based on the acclaimed breakout series Rick and Morty (Q1 2016).

truTV will debut Those Who Can’t, its first-ever scripted half-hour comedy, on Feb. 11, immediately following the season 5 premiere of fan favorite Impractical Jokers. In addition, truTV will launch new episodes of hits like Fameless (Jan. 18), The Carbonaro Effect (spring) and Hack My Life (March).

CNN will continue expanding its lineup of original series with as many as four new shows this year, including The Eighties, while also covering every angle of the upcoming presidential election

Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will mark its seventh annual TCM Classic Film Festival (April 28-May1) and set sail for the sixth TCM Classic Cruise (Nov. 12-19), featuring an expanded seven-day itinerary.

“Success in today’s media universe means having quality programming that resonates with socially connected audiences across a wide range of demos,” said David Levy, president of Turner. “We are going to be pushing a lot of boundaries in 2016, not only in the types of content we create but also in how we use that content to connect with viewers across multiple platforms. Cartoon Network

In 2016, Cartoon Network will mark the global launch of its newly re-imagined The Powerpuff Girls (spring 2016), which was featured at Cartoon Network’s TCA breakfast (details below). In addition, series favorites Clarence (Jan. 18), Steven Universe (Thursdays), Uncle Grandpa (Jan. 25), Teen Titans Go! (Jan. 7) and Regular Show will be returning with all new episodes. The network will also be expanding its efforts in the Steam and Coding space.

The Powerpuff Girls Breakfast

Cartoon Network celebrates its new, completely re-imagined The Powerpuff Girls with a special sneak peek over a hearty breakfast. Attendees will be treated to an array of tasty and colorful treats as they learned how the original trio of girl power named Blossom (voiced by Amanda Leighton), Bubbles (Kristen Li) and Buttercup (Natalie Palamides) continues to save the world before bedtime.


truTV

Heading into 2016, truTV is ready to launch its first-ever scripted comedy, Those Who Can’t, which it will introduce to television critics this morning during a panel session with the cast and showrunner (details below). On the programming front, truTV scored a major coup when it picked up Billy Eichner‘s outrageous show Billy on the Street, one of many new series the network launched during the first year of the new brand. Returning hits include the top-rated Impractical Jokers (Feb. 11), featuring jokesters Joe, Murr, Q and Sal; Fameless (Jan. 18), from the mischievous and comic mind of David Spade; The Carbonaro Effect (spring), starring magicianMichael Carbonaro; and Hack My Life (March), hosted by Kevin Pereira and Brooke Van Poppelen.

Those Who Can’t – Premiere: Thursday, Feb. 11, at 10:30 p.m. (ET/PT)

truTV’s first foray into full-length scripted comedy, Those Who Can’t follows three trouble-making teachers, played by show creators Adam Cayton-Holland, Andrew Orvedahl and Ben Roy of the Denver-based comedy troupe The Grawlix. More inept than the kids they teach, they’re out to beat the system as they struggle to survive each day on their own terms. Joining them is Maria Thayer (Eagleheart) the school librarian with an insuppressible passion for life.

Executive Session with Kevin Reilly

Kevin Reilly, president of TBS & TNT and chief creative officer of Turner Entertainment , will sit down for a Q&A with TCA attendees, during which he will elaborate on his strategy for the networks, including the evolution and future of the brands.


TBS

TBS is set to launch as many as seven new shows in the first half of 2016, three of which – Angie Tribeca, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee and The Detour – will be presented this morning at the TCA Press Tour. Other shows slated for the first half of 2016 include the distinctive new comedies Search Party andWrecked, as well as the relationship-based game show Separation Anxiety and the competition series America’s Greatest Makers (working title), produced in partnership with Intel.

Angie Tribeca – 25-Hour Premiere Marathon: Beginning Sunday, Jan. 17, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT)

From Steve & Nancy Carell comes Angie Tribeca, the unapologetic series that will make audiences rethink the crime genre while also reconsidering what they made for dinner that night. Rashida Jones, Hayes MacArthur, Jere Burns, Deon Cole and Andrée Vermeulen star in TBS’s first-ever police procedural as a tough outfit of detectives who refuse to shy away from dead bodies that are not alive. The complex mysteries they encounter are wrapped inside other complex mysteries featuring violence, grit, sex, gritty sex and a detective who will stop at nothing to get her man…or woman…or ferret.

Full Frontal with Samantha Bee – Premiere: Monday, Feb. 8, at 10:30 p.m. (ET/PT)

One of the most unique and visible comedic voices on television is coming to TBS in Full Frontal with Samantha Bee. Breaking up late-night’s all-male sausage fest, this new show from the longtime Daily Show correspondent will feature Samantha’s nuanced view of political and cultural issues, her sharp interview skills, her repartee with world leaders and much more.

The Detour – Premiere: Monday, April 11, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT)

The Detour is a what-in-the-living-hell-is-wrong-with-this-family comedy created by comic super-couple Jason Jones & Samantha Bee and inspired by their own experiences with family trips. Jones stars as unfiltered dad Nate, who hits the road with wife Robin (Natalie Zea) and kids Delilah (Ashley Gerasimovich) and Jared (Liam Carroll). Every leg of their trip is fraught with disaster as they encounter one hellish turn after another. If there’s trouble on the road, this family will find it and plow into it.

TNT

TNT has begun shifting its development focus toward more premium fare, closing deals for the eagerly anticipated miniseries The Alienist, from True Detective director Cary Fukunaga; Animal Kingdom, an adrenaline-charged drama about a Southern California crime family, starring Ellen Barkin (Sea of Love, This Boy’s Life,Oceans 13); and Good Behavior, featuring a very different role for Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey). TNT has also renewed several fan favorites, including The Last Ship,Major Crimes, Rizzoli & Isles, Murder in the First and The Librarians.

TNT’s presentation this morning will include a Q&A session with the cast and executive producers of Animal Kingdom, as well as first-look clips from Good Behavior.

 

Animal Kingdom – Premiere: 2016

Animal Kingdom is an adrenaline-charged drama starring Emmy® and Tony® winner Ellen Barkin (Sea of Love, This Boy’s Life, Oceans 13) as the matriarch of a Southern California crime family and Scott Speedman (The Strangers, The Vow) as her second in command. Inspired by the award-winning Australian film of the same name, the series also stars Shawn Hatosy (Southland, Reckless), Ben Robson (Vikings, Dracula: The Dark Prince), Jake Weary ( Pretty Little Liars, It Follows) and Finn Cole (Peaky Blinders, An Inspector Calls).

Good Behavior – Premiere: 2016

Good Behavior is a seductive thriller starring Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey) as Letty Dobesh, a thief, con artist and all-around femme fatale whose life is always one wrong turn, one bad decision from implosion – which is exactly how she likes it. Based on a series of novels by Blake Crouch (Wayward Pines) and executive-produced by Crouch and showrunner Chad Hodge ( Wayward Pines, The Playboy Club), Good Behavior also stars Juan Diego Botto (El Greco , 1492: Conquest of Paradise), Lusia Strus (Wayward Pines, Cotton) and Terry Kinney ( Oz, Show Me a Hero).


Looking Ahead: Turner in 2016

In addition to the big happenings at TBS, TNT, truTV and Cartoon Network, there’s a lot to look forward to at Turner’s Adult Swim,Boomerang, CNN, HLN and Turner Classic Movies (TCM), as well as at Turner Sports. Here’s a quick rundown:

 

Turner Sports

In February, TNT will exclusively present NBA All-Star Weekend from Toronto, with all of the weekend’s signature events slated for Feb. 12-14. This marks Turner Sports’ 31st year of NBA All-Star coverage and the 14th consecutive year airing the NBA All-Star Game.

TBS will be the exclusive home of the 2016 NCAA Final Four – including the National Semifinals on Saturday, April 4, andNational Championship on Monday, April 6 – marking the first time in the history of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship the title game will be televised on cable. TBS, CBS, TNT and truTV will combine to televise every game of the 2016 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship in its entirety for the sixth straight year.

This summer will mark the debut of ELEAGUE, Turner’s new professional eSports league in partnership with WME l IMG. ELEAGUE will include a live fan experience, televised coverage airing exclusively on TBS and extensive, high-quality digital event coverage and content extensions. Turner Studios in Atlanta will serve as the headquarters for the new league and primary operations facility for the live gaming experience, with the first year of action centered on Valve Corporation’s popular Counter-Strike: Global Offensive eSports title. The televised presentation of the competitive gaming events will feature 10 consecutive weeks of programming twice per year – the most extensive commitment to televised eSports programming to date – airing Friday nights on TBS.

 

Adult Swim

Adult Swim is ready to keep the momentum going in 2016. The New Year will include the seventh season of the Emmy®-winning hit Childrens Hospital (Jan. 22); a Rick and Morty mobile game (Q1), based on the breakout series and one of Entertainment Weekly’s favorite shows of 2015; new seasons of hit shows Eric Andre (spring) and Mr. Pickles (spring); and a brand new Adam Scott and Jon Daly special (spring).

 

Boomerang

Since its re-launch in 2015 as an all-animation global network, Boomerang has closed a multi-series deal for original programming fromWarner Bros. Animation that includes the shows Bunnicula , Wabbit – A Looney Tunes Production and Be Cool Scooby-Doo!, all of which will continue in the new year.

 

CNN

CNN shattered viewership records as the only network to moderate both Democratic and Republican candidate debates, setting the stage for the 2016 presidential election. As only CNN can, the network will devote significant resources towards covering every angle of the upcoming election. Hundreds of reporters and producers will be in full force providing the most comprehensive and up-to-the-minute coverage from all key states and races across the country.

In addition to the network’s signature news and political programming, CNN will add four new original series to its slate this year, including:

Race for the White House (Raw/Trigger Street Productions), a thrilling mini docuseries narrated by Kevin Spacey and executive-produced by Spacey and Dana Brunetti, about the most iconic historical campaigns for the Presidency of the United States.

United Shades of America (All3Media), a race and culture series hosted by comedian W. Kamau Bell.

The Eighties from Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Mark Herzog, which explores the individuals and events that shaped the decade.

Declassified (All3Media), a docuseries hosted by U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers about America’s covert operations around the world.

CNN will also roll out new seasons of returning series including Peabody and Emmy®-winning Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown (ZPZ Productions); Morgan Spurlock Inside Man (Warrior Poets), hosted by the Oscar®-nominated documentary filmmaker; the investigative docuseries This Is Life With Lisa Ling (part2); the travel seriesThe Wonder List with Bill Weir (CNN); and the investigative docuseries The Hunt with John Walsh (ZPZ Productions).

 

HLN

HLN will continue its remarkable growing trend in 2016 with Morning Express with Robin Meade,cable’s #2 morning news show; primetime personalities Nancy Grace and Dr. Drew; weekday host Robin Meade; and weekend host Lynn Smith.

 

Turner Classic Movies

Turner Classic Movies (TCM) is looking to build on last year’s biggest TCM Classic Film Festival ever with the 2016 edition, set for April 28-May 1. The the seventh annual gathering will welcome legendary stars, award-winning filmmakers and classic movie fans from around the globe to celebrate the central theme of Moving Pictures, the films that bring us to tears, rouse us to action and inspire us.

Also this year, TCM will set sail on the high seas for the sixth time with the 2016 TCM Classic Cruise aboard for the first time the Disney Fantasy. Sailing Nov. 12-19, the TCM Classic Cruise is expanding to seven days, with new ports of call in San Juan and St. Maarten, as well as a return to Disney’s private island, Castaway Key.
