ARTIST BIOS
Hélène Grimaud is an incredibly accomplished as a pianist with 15 recordings and over 850000 record sold; she is the author of three books which have been translated into several languages; in 1999, at the age of 30, she founded a Wolf Conservatory in Salem, NY; and she discovered at age ten, while playing Bach, that she has Synesthesia. Seeing these colors helped her memorize scores and has made playing the piano more visceral. It also helps her relate to the wolves whose howls she sees as colours. Grimaud was born in 1969 in Aix-en-Provence where she began her piano studies at the conservatory in Marseille. She was accepted into the Paris Conservatoire at just 13 and won first prize in piano performance a mere three years later. In 1987, she gave her well-received debut recital in Tokyo. The same year the renowned conductor Daniel Barenboim invited her to perform with the Orchestre de Paris.
