Through Women’s Eyes Film Festival is celebrating its 15th year on April 5 & 6 as part of the Sarasota Film Festival.

Presenting 23 films, the festival highlights films directed, produced or written by women on topics of global importance.  The films present issues and stories of women in 27 countries. 

 

The first film “No Problem!  Six Months with the Barefoot Grandmamas”, is based in India.  It is the story of  the Barefoot College which teaches women from many countries how to fabricate, install and maintain solar-powered household lighting systems.
Next is an assortment of short films – 101 Cupcakes (Australia), FE-MALE (Switzerland), Alina Hatson (Greece), Kara Women Speak (Ethiopia), Letter for Hope (New Zealand), and Roe at Risk (USA). 
The shorts are followed by two full length documentaries – “Vessel “(The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Ecuador, Tanzania and Morocco) and “Light Fly, Fly High” (India).  The final film of the day, at 7:45 is a narrative, “Lies I told my Little Sister”.
 
Sunday is another day of fabulous films, beginning with “Maestra” (Cuba) and “Where the War Still Echoes” (Syria).  At 11:30 p.m., we will have another section of wonderful short films, which will be followed by two documentaries:  “Red Light, Green Light” and “I Am A Girl”.  Both of these films represent many countries around the world.
 
The last film of the day, “She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry” (USA) explores the history of the women’s liberation movement in the 60s & 70s.
 
In addition to the films, Through Women’s Eyes is hosting a Filmmakers’ Reception on Saturday night from 5:30 – 7:30 at 1819 Main Street.  The reception is an opportunity to meet the filmmakers and discuss the films. 
 
 Through Women’s Eyes is presented by the Gulf Coast Chapter of the US National Committee – UN Women.  The all volunteer group works to increase awareness of women’s issues worldwide and to raise funds for the program supported by UN Women.
