The New Victory Theater presents
Justin Roberts & the Not Ready for Naptime Players

The Mysterious Hat: a Rock Concert for Kiddos
Limited Engagement April 25 – 26, 2015

New York, NY (March 18, 2015) –  Justin Roberts and the Not Ready for Naptime Players, America’s favorite powerpop poets for the young and young at heart, take the stage in The Mysterious Hat running at The New Victory Theater for a limited engagement on April 25 – 26, 2015. A brand new concert experience designed especially for the New Vic, The Mysterious Hat brings Roberts’ indie hits to the NYC family scene with intelligent and whimsically rocking music for kids and their parents.

Bop along to catchy compositions of happy harmonies, bursts of brass and hand-clapping choruses when two-time GRAMMY® nominee for Best Children’s Album (Jungle Gym, 2011; Recess, 2014) Justin Roberts performs at The New Victory with the Not Ready for Naptime Players. With appearances by his puppet friends Willy the Whale, Lil Dave and Tim, Justin and the gang discover a “mysterious hat” while performing both brand new songs and beloved favorites. Hits like “Willy Was a Whale,” “Pop Fly” and “Yellow Bus” will be performed, along with songs from his latest GRAMMY-nominated, Parents’ Choice and NAPPA Gold Award-winning album, Recess.

“My theory on writing songs for kids and families has always been that, first and foremost, I have to believe the song myself, which means finding the emotional center of the song,” says Roberts discussing what it’s like to write songs specifically for kids. “Just like with a song for adults, there need to be good hooks, memorable melodies and lyrics that mean something,” he continues. Lauded by The New York Times as “the Judy Blume of kiddie rock,” Roberts’ unique musical stylings are compared to Elvis Costello, Buddy Holly, Nick Lowe and Weezer. Justin recently published his first picture book, The Smallest Girl in the Smallest Grade, and wrote the score for a new musical, Hansel and Gretel: A Wickedly Delicious Musical Treat, which premiered in Chicago this past December.

Roberts began his music career in the early 1990s in the Minneapolis-based indie-rock band Pimentos for Gus, but his love for kids music grew from his day job as a Montessori preschool teacher. He released the first of his current 12 albums, Great Big Sun, in 1997. Since then, he has played at renowned venues and festivals including Lollapalooza, LA’s Getty Museum, Seattle’s Moore Theater, Chicago’s Ravinia, DC’s National Geographic Live and Symphony Space. He has appeared on “The Today Show” and Nick Jr. television, and his song “Get Me Some Glasses” was featured during a World Series broadcast. He is the winner of seven Parents’ Choice Gold Awards, and Naptime was selected as one of Parents’ Choice “25 Best Children’s CDs of the Past 25 Years.” The winner of seven National Parenting Publications (NAPPA) Gold Awards, he has been one of Amazon.com’s “Top 10 Children’s CDs of the Year” four times and he was voted as the “#1 Children’s CD of the Year” by the Fids and Kamily Poll in 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2013.

Along with Justin Roberts, the Not Ready for Naptime Players are Liam Davis on electric guitar, keyboards and vocals; Gerald Dowd on drums and vocals; Jacqueline Schimmel on bass and vocals; and David Winer on trumpet, keyboard and percussion.
