The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee Awards $71,400 in College Scholarships

Thirty area students received scholarships to pursue undergraduate studies.

(Sarasota-Manatee) The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee (JFSM) recently awarded $71,400 to 30 students from the Sarasota and Manatee region. All recipients are pursuing full-time undergraduate studies at universities, colleges or community colleges and have demonstrated a commitment to religious and community service involvement, a strong academic record, and demonstrated financial need.

Award recipients and their families were welcomed at a reception on the JFSM campus on May 20, where scholarship fund-holders were able to meet and present certificates to recipients of their respective scholarships. Haven Miller, who received one of five Betty Schoenbaum scholarships, spoke about how JFSM youth programs and scholarships have shaped her academic goals. Maria Wirries, a Robert Michelson Interfaith Scholarship recipient and musical theater major at Penn State, performed “Don’t Rain on My Parade” and “Almost There.”

Roxanne Felig, who received awards from the Edith Becker Lilienfeld Scholarship, Meyer Sarkin Scholarship, B’nai B’rith Gulf Coast Lodge #2004 Scholarship and The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee College Scholarship, was unable to attend the reception but provided the following testimonial: “The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee played an integral role in my life for many years. I was fortunate to participate in the Florence Melton Communiteen Program, the Bob Malkin Young Ambassador mission and the March of the Living mission. Since graduating from Pine View two years ago, I also received very generous college scholarships from The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee to help defer the cost of my college education. Without these scholarships, attending college would have been a huge financial burden. I am so lucky to be live in a community with an organization that fosters such amazing opportunities for our youth.” Felig will be entering her second year at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon.

“Helping young people reach their educational goals is paramount to our mission,” says Howard Tevlowitz, JFSM’s executive director, who explains that JFSM has awarded nearly $440,000 in college scholarships in the past nine years. “We’re grateful to the generous donors who endow their legacy gifts for scholarships funds so that, year after year, students can pursue their dreams at an institution of higher learning. Many of the young people who received scholarships have found ways to give back to their Jewish community, exemplifying the tradition of “L’dor V’dor,” or passing good along from generation to generation.”
