Great Lakes Festival presents world premiere of Hand Eye

   

Grammy-winning eighth blackbird will perform the world premiere of Hand Eye at Seligman Performing Arts Center at 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 27.

Event: The Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival presents Hand Eye, a one-of-a-kind audio tour of one of metro Detroit’s biggest contemporary art collections, composed by the Sleeping Giant collective. The evening-length piece will premiere at 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 27 at Seligman Performing Arts Center in a performance headlined by three-time Grammy-winning eighth blackbird. This groundbreaking collaboration has been years in the making.

Who: Sleeping Giant is a collective of six young American composers. These “talented guys” (The New Yorker), who are “rapidly gaining notice for their daring innovations, stylistic range and acute attention to instrumental nuance” (WQXR) have composed a diverse body of music that prizes vitality and diversity over a rigid aesthetic. Their works have appeared in concert halls and clubs throughout the U.S. and Europe.

 

eighth blackbird combines the finesse of a string quartet, the energy of a rock band and the audacity of a storefront theater company. The Chicago-based, three-time Grammy-winning “super-musicians” (LA Times) entertain and provoke audiences across the country and around the world.

ABOUT THE GREAT LAKES CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL
The Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival presents more than 20 concerts in locations across southeastern Michigan during two weeks each June. The list of performers over the years reads like a long “who’s who” in chamber music, including Jaime Laredo, Jeremy Denk, the Emerson String Quartet and a host of internationally-renowned musicians. The 2015 Festival will mark the inaugural season of cellist Paul Watkins as the Festival’s Artistic Director. In this role, he follows the Festival’s founding Artistic Director, James Tocco, who retired in 2014. The cellist of the Emerson String Quartet, Watkins is an accomplished instrumentalist, pianist and conductor.
