The Children’s Healthy Pantry:
“1 out of 5 children in the Sarasota County area suffer from hunger.” The Children’s Healthy Pantry was established in 2007 and aims to supply healthy snacks to children who aren’t promised at least three meals a day. Present in a total of eight Title 1 Schools throughout the Sarasota and Bradenton area. The Children’s Healthy Pantry may be the only source of food for students after school ends. Free breakfast and lunch are provided from these respective schools. In an effort to raise money to maintain these pantries and expand to the remaining six Title 1 schools in the area, the board members of this organization and the respective corporate sponsors present a night of easy listening from three world-renowned jazz musicians.

The Event:

The first annual Taste of Jazz is a ticketed event and all guests must have a ticket for entry. $75 ticket holders are granted general admission seating; $125 ticket holders are granted general admission seating and entry into the reception immediately following the concert. This reception will include catered delights from Michaels on East, Champagne and a chance to mingle with Jazz musicians Dick Hyman, Derek Smith & Daryl Sherman.
The Jazz Musicians
Daryl Sherman is a fixture of Manhattan’s nightlife, playing and singing for savvy New Yorkers and international visitors at the Waldorf Astoria’s famed Cole Porter Steinway. Since her arrival in the mid-70s, the “Cabaret Classic Award” recipient, has held successful stints at Sinatra hang-outs like Jilly’s, Jimmy Weston’s or Eddie Condon’s, there’s hardly a jazz joint, supper club or hotel she has missed. Ms. Sherman’s latest CD, Johnny Mercer: Centennial Tribute is hailed as one of the best of the year. She has performed and recorded with such notables as Dick Hyman, Bob Dorough, Warren Vache, Boots Maleson, Wycliffe Gordon and Tommy Flanagan
.

Jazz pianist Derek Smith took up the piano in early childhood. A native of London, Smith began his professional career at 14. In the mid-1950s, Mr. Smith moved to New York City, where he became a session musician in much demand. At the end of the 1960s, Smith added to his workload piano duties in Doc Severinsen’s Tonight Show Orchestra. Smith became a fixture on the jazz landscape. In addition to solo performances, Smith also regularly played in a trio with Milt Hinton and Bobby Rosengarden.

Dick Hyman is a versatile virtuoso. Hyman has functioned as pianist, organist, arranger, music director and composer. His versatility in all of these areas has resulted in a long career involving film scores, orchestral compositions, concert appearances and well over 100 albums recorded under his own name. Hyman has had a prolific career in New York as a studio musician and won seven Most Valuable Player Awards from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. He won an Emmy for his original score for Sunshine’s on the Way, a daytime drama, and another for musical direction of a PBS special on Eubie Blake. Hyman served as composer/arranger/conductor/pianist for numerous Woody Allen films, including The Purple Rose of Cairo, Hannah and Her Sisters, Mighty Aphrodite and Sweet and Lowdown.
