TEXAS RANGERS ACTIVATE CATCHER GEOVANY SOTO

FROM 15-DAY DISABLED LIST

RHP Jerome Williams designated for assignment

Houston, TX – The Texas Rangers today announced that catcher Geovany Soto has been activated from the 15-day disabled list. Soto will be in uniform for tonight’s game versus the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park.

To make room for Soto on the active roster, RHP Jerome Williams has been designated for assignment.

Soto has been sidelined since straining his right groin running the bases on July 21 at Yankee Stadium. He was 6-for-16 (.375) with one HR and 2 RBI while hitting safely in all 5 games on rehab assignment at Round Rock (AAA), August 1-5. Soto started 4 games at catcher and one as the DH.

Soto had started three games behind the plate for the Rangers since being activated from the 60-day DL on July 17 after missing entire season. He was 4-for-11 with one RBI in those contests. Soto sustained torn lateral meniscus cartilage in his right knee during a spring training game on March 23 and had surgery on March 26.

Williams was 1-1, 9.90 (11 ER/10.0 IP) in 2 starts for the Rangers since his contract was purchased from Round Rock on July 25. He lost at Cleveland, 12-2 in his last outing a week ago tonight, allowing 13 hits and 10 runs in 4.0 IP. The Rangers have 10 days to trade, release, or outright Williams to the minor leagues.

With today’s moves, the Rangers’ major league roster is at 38 players.
