STATEMENT: MAYOR GARCETTI AND COUNCILMEMBER BUSCAINO ON ADDITION OF JAIL TRANSPORT TEAM IN HARBOR DIVISION

“I am encouraged that LAPD has quickly answered my call to dedicate a vehicle that can transport arrestees out of Harbor Division to the nearest booking facility.

This is a good first step that many in the community have asked for in recent months. We expect it to save our officers valuable time, and enable them to stay on patrol in the communities they serve — rather than driving long distances just to book a suspect.

We will continue working with Councilmember Buscaino and Chief Beck to put more officers on the streets in the short term, and to open the Harbor Division Jail in the coming years. The community’s engagement on these issues has been crucial, and we look forward to building on this progress.” — Mayor Eric Garcetti

“I am pleased that LAPD Chief Charlie Beck and Mayor Eric Garcetti have heard loud and clear the message from our Harbor Area residents who have so passionately conveyed their desire for more officers policing our streets.

Today we announce the roll out of the jail transport team, which will allow our officers to focus on patrolling, rather than having to transport detainees up and down the Harbor Freeway.

This action is proof that the Harbor Area has a relevant voice and that we are being heard.

I am proud of the Chief and Mayor for acting with a sense of urgency in response to the Harbor community and delivering this creative solution that brings us one step closer toward permanent re-opening of the Harbor Division Jail.” — Councilmember Joe Buscaino
