U.S. Paralympians finish with 18 medals in Sochi

Team USA completed the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games with 18 medals, highlighted by a podium sweep in men’s snowboardcross and a gold-medal winning performance in sled hockey. The U.S. sled hockey team became the first to win back-to-back gold medals in the history of the Games with a 1-0 victory over Russia.

   

Biathlon
Lowell Bailey captured the bronze medal in the 10-kilometer at the IBU World Cup in Kontiolahti, Finald.  Also, Susan Dunklee finished seventh and eighth in the 10K and 7.5K sprints.  continue

Diving
David Boudia and Troy Dumais finished fifth in the 3-meter synchronized event at the FINA World Series opener in Beijing.  Boudia also finished sixth in the men’s 10-meter.

Fencing
The U.S. earned the women’s team saber gold medal at the FIE World Cup in Antalya, Turkey.  continue

Figure Skating
Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker won the ice dance title at the ISU World Junior Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria, while Nathan Chen earned the bronze medal in men’s singles.  continue

Gymnastics
Chris Brooks and Josh Dixon placed fourth and fifth on the high bar at the FIG World Cup in Cottbus, Germany. Brooks also tied for fifth on parallel bars, while Brandon Wynn placed fifth on the still rings.  continue

Ski/Snowboard
Ted Ligety and Mikaela Shiffrin earned their fifth wins of the season to claim overall world cup titles in men’s giant slalom and women’s slalom at the FIS Alpine World Cup Final in Lenzerheide, Sweden.  continue 

Newly crowned world cup sprint champion Kikkan Randall placed fourth in the final world cup sprint of the season in Falun, Sweden. Meanwhile, Sophie Caldwell placed sixth and Andrew Newell finished eighth.

Jessica Jerome jumped to eighth place in women’s normal hill at the FIS Nordic World Cup in Falun, Sweden.  continue 

Hannah Kearney reclaimed the top spot in the world cup standings with a win in dual moguls at the world cup event in Voss-Myrkdalen, Norway. Meanwhile, Bradley Wilson finished third. Eight Americans earned top-10 finishes overall.  continue

Lindsey Jacobellis finished second and Mick Dierdorff finished fifth in snowboardcross at the world cup event in La Molina, Spain.  Earlier in the week, Jacobellis also placed sixth in Veysonnaz, Switzerland.

Speedskating
Shani Davis and Heather Richardson earned the 2013-14 Grand World Cup titles at the ISU World Cup in Heerenveen, the Netherlands. Richardson also garnered the overall world cup title in the 1,000-meter and finished second in the 500.  continue 

J.R. Celski and Jessica Smith earned gold and silver medals in the men’s and women’s 3,000-meter at the ISU Short Track World Championships in Montreal.  continue

Triathlon
Gwen Jorgensen and Katie Hursey finished first and second at the 2014 ITU World Cup opener in Mooloolaba, Australia.  continue

Wrestling
The U.S. men’s freestyle team defeated Ukraine, 7-1, to finish third at the FILA World Cup in Inglewood, Calif. continue

 
Spotlight On

Five U.S. Olympians were selected to the list of 37 Athlete Role Models for the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games. Erin Cafaro (rowing), Miles Chamley-Watson (fencing), Kendrick Farris (weightlifting), Khatuna Lorig (archery) and Dwight Phillips (track & field) will help mentor the 3,800 young athletes who will compete at the Games, scheduled for August 16-28.

The USOC recently announced the Sochi Games finalists for Best of U.S., a new awards program that recognizes outstanding performances from the Olympic and Paralympic Games, as determined by fan vote. Winners will be selected in each of the following categories: Best Male/Female Olympian, Best Male/Female Paralympian, Team of the Olympic/Paralympic Games, Moment of the Olympic/Paralympic Games, Team Behind the Team Award and Fan of the Games Award. Fan voting continues through March 21 on Team USA’sOlympic and ParalympicFacebook pages.
