End of Summer Camper & Student Celebration –

Night at the Museum: History Comes Alive was a Hit!

Special thanks to all of the dedicated Volunteers and Student Docents who made this program a success.

Summer Docent and event organizer Josh Karg portrays archaeologist (and contributor of the Museum’s founding collection) Montague Tallant.
The South Florida Museum welcomed children and families from this year’s Summer Science Camp programs, as well as local students, for an end of the summer celebration which brought science and history to life! Organized and conceived by Hunter Windham and Josh Karg, along with Wil Gavin – all local students who served as Museum Docents this summer – the event brought science and history-loving kids together to interact with the historical figures and characters who have impacted knowledge and learning throughout the Museum’s history – and throughout human history! The event was a huge success. Thanks to Hunter, Josh, Wil and all of the staff and incredible volunteers who made this fantastic evening possible.

Archaeologists showed guests the methods of excavation as we explore man’s ancient past to re-create the tools, diet & lifestyles of our early Florida ancestors, the Paleoindians and Archaic Peoples. Guest were able to interact with tools and objects used by archaeologists and the peoples they studied.

A Tocobaga era man demonstrated his shell hammer and fishing nets while Montague Tallant shared his stories of adventure and discovery in finding the ancient middens and mounds filled with beautiful artistic pottery sherds and hints to the ancient past.

Hernando De Soto and

his Conquistadors roamed the halls and Spanish Plaza in their plumed helmets of polished metal, illustrating the striking contrast between European metallurgy and the Florida Natives’ use of wood, bone and shell.

The Medical Gallery came alive with doctors and pharmacists demonstrating the change in medicinal technologies over the years and the scientific power of the microscope in examining the tiniest details of our natural world.

Additionally, a volunteer portraying William Clendenin shared his love of mollusks with a game of “Show & Shell & Classify Like Clendenin” which taught guests how to sort sea shells by class and Bat Fogarty shared his passion for making boats which was a huge part of the early economy here on the Manatee River. Guests also had a chance to create their own constellation guides by investigating the Big Dipper & Cassiopeia as navigational markers to find the North Star in the night sky

Grannie Emma shared  (portrayed by Museum Educator Susan McCarthy) old folk tales and recipes in the Pine Uplands exhibit, giving guests a chance to peek back into the pioneer days of Florida.

Visitors to the program shared their appreciation and enthusiasm for this opportunity to continue learning about our history and culture. Comments concerning the event included:

“Really cool! I’ve lived in FL for 18 years and there’s still so much to learn.”

“I learned something new at every station!”

“Loved the stars! I would love to know more about star navigation – we will come back for planetarium.”

“Pioneer”

In this installment of the new monthly blog, learn more about an early Bradenton settler who introduced coffee production to the area – and visit the Museum to see related objects in the Collections Connections exhibit case and to view the exhibition  Coffee: The World in Your Cup on view through August 29.

“Pioneer” – Julia Atzeroth epitomized the meaning of this word. Originally from Bavaria, Germany, she and her family were the first white settlers in Terra Ceia, claiming 160 acres through the federal Armed Occupation Act of 1842.  Madam Joe, as she was known throughout the community, received this moniker from her own nickname for her husband whom she called Mr. Joe.

After her husband’s death in 1871, Julia Atzeroth moved to Fogartyville, now Northwest Bradenton, to be closer to her daughter Eliza, wife of William Fogarty. It was at this home, in 1880, that Madam Joe grew the first pound of coffee produced in the U.S., cultivated from the eight coffee trees she kept in her large garden.
